Bah, missed the DHL guy by all of 5 seconds. Those guys really don't wait around.

Wait? They don't leave the package at front door if nobody is home? Do they require signature?

I'm interested to see how DHL delivers my N900. Before DHL pulled their quick retreat from the U.S., our DHL driver always wanted to chat for at least five or ten minutes after delivering a package. Quite a nice guy, but it felt odd in contrast to competitors who just want to get their runs done so they can go home.
Our FedEx driver is of the second type. We've no windows on the driveway side of our house so we're not certain, but we strongly suspect he or she is a former newspaper delivery person. It doesn't sound as though the truck ever comes to a full stop, and we find our packages randomly placed (and scuffed a bit) in the driveway as if they were simply thrown.
Our UPS guy, in contrast, went so far as to simply walk in our front door to carefully place packages on our coffee table until my wife asked him to stop. It was kind of him, but it worried her to hear an unknown someone walking around downstairs.

My FedEx / UPS experiences are the opposite of yours. Great service with FedEx, consistently. But UPS drivers toss packages onto the porch and RUN (I kid you not) to the truck like track stars. Didn't make me happy when it was a printer...
