not sure if its an aspirational or inspirational story ... still, i think youre right, if there were enough resources for the initial build in. oh well i wish you luck with that project, as you can see im clearly interested in integrated development and research.
honestly, I'd love to build über-smartphones above the 2000€ pricetag. But I don't have the money for that currently and I think it's very difficult because of all the patents...

it wouldn't be something spectacular like the Nokia Harmattan Device..
And do you really think that the open-information-model we saw at the Open Pandora worked so well?

Okay. But I think that is really interesting.
To everyone:
Do you prefer an "open information" model like we saw at the Open Pandora Project, with all its dissapointments and delays or do you prefer a "top secret" model like we see it today with Nokia and their Harmattan Device?

yes. You would be amazed to know what chinese are doing these days.
Just a few thoughts to while the time away until the n9/n950 arrives...

I think it would be an awesome accomplishment if some members of this community could design a modular mobile device with, perhaps, the possibility to upgrade hardware over time. That can utilize the best or most suitable linux based software for a mobile computer. I have no idea how feasible this is. For example, can you get even enough people to agree on type of components and software? Once you have a design. Who would build it? For instance, there are several Chinese companies that make cheap copycat devices. Could you contract them to make a device according to your specs? How many would have to be made to make it afforable? Sure, I'm scratching the surface and, well, maybe it's best to leave it to a manufacture, but it would be fun if you could do it on a small scale for people to play with.

open is better for a small project where people that are pre-ordering are really more like investors, how else will you convince anyone to put down some money otherwise?
for a big company, they don't need the pre-orders, and open information just helps the competitors and can make them look bad when a project is cancelled or features removed or whatever.

I prefer the top secret. Especially for companies in size of Nokia, Samsung etc.
Especially how Apple does it more than Nokia where they truly don't tell you anything and most of the time what they announcement really is something new(while that has changed a bit lately).
This consumer device might just be a device from Nokia that has no leaked picture before announcement since long long time.

That said it doesn't matter how the introduction to OS or device is done if the product released to consumer is not on par with competition.
