Does dial central work with gmail talk? I can set up my gmail account, but, when I try to dial a number I get a message saying invalid number.

I gets confusing with google having google voice (what I'm not interested in) and google talk VOIP service through google chat.

I'm trying to dial a US number and have tried the area code and number and have tried +1 and the number.

I'm not interested in video, just calls.

Can someone fill me in?

What exactly do you want to do?

1. Do you want to text chat with your contacts in gmail? If yes, you need "gtalk". This can be done by going to Applications - > settings -> VOIP and IM accounts -> Click "New" -> Select "Google Talk" and fill in your details.
This works because gtalk is integrated into the n900

2. Do you want to call phone numbers in your google contacts list or in your n900 contacts list using Google Voice?
This is where you need to use a Google Voice client like qgvdial or DialCentral.

3. If you want to use the desktop gmail feature that allows you to call phone numbers, but in the n900, then I recommend reading this thread.

A large company is made of small groups not all with resources they need. IIRC VOIP in GTalk uses a browser plugin and is incompatible with XMPP.

Might I also mention it was by luck that I saw this thread and might I recommend future posts being on the DC thread so I will get a notification about it.

In that case, you need to read the thread started by xur17 about yate. It seems to be the only way that has a chance of working for the moment.
