Depends where you are in the UK.
I have tried Google Maps via the various mapping programs, Sygic (which crashes every 10 minutes!).
The best solution I have found for me is to follow a twitter feed which tweets the BBC traffic updates as they come in - in my part of the world it's TyneTravel. I woul suggest searching for it, and then seeing what Twitter highlights as similar. I recall that in certain areas the BBC themselves tweet traffic updates, but not here.
I use TwimGo as my twitter client, and it works well for me, when plugged into a car charger and set to 1 or 5 minute updates. Seems to be about the most responsive to incidents as well.

if you go to your local BBC website you will find a travel map - mine is http://www.bbc.co.uk/travelnews/tyne/roads/unplanned/
The best you will be able to do with a moving map is google traffic on one of the mapping apps like mappero. for twitter, you will need to find a twitter feed for the area you are in.

Not used Mappero on the N900, but I did use maemomapper, which is it's daddy.
You need to make Google maps your source, and then you should be able to enable the google traffic as a layer.
By the way, i came across someone that used there rss widget to recieve traffic info but no instructions how to do it? Anyone ere done that before?
