I take it your looking to get the N9 and i still think it will not be available in the UK so we will just have to wait and see, however i have placed an order for 20 of the 64gb version and i will have an answer on that at the end of the month so will probably offload some on ebay.

The practical steps which can, and should, be taken now are to identify all the IPR we need continued access to and to get Nokia to put it under a suitably free licence. That will probably take a year as Nokia will have little interest in paying their lawyers to work on that so we will have to call in all the help we can to even achieve that much!

We may need some redistributable binaries to continue with SW development and how do you propose that "we" get those.?

Hard problem, which is why it needs to be worked on for a year or so. I think the starting point is to identify exactly what we are asking for and why: which binaries do we want to distribute? why? what is planned which requires this? what might someone want to do which they won't be able to do if we don't have this?
Then we need to try to mobilise our friends (Quim, etc) to help understand what objections there may be and how we overcome them and get support for what we need.
There are no guarantees of success but my guess is that it will become harder over time rather than easier (because friends and supporters leave and Nokia cares less about the community). So, it needs to start soon (if it hasn't already).
I am hoping someone who has been involved in some of those discussions already will step forward to lead this.

Who is "we" in your comments and how do "we" get the license? Quim once queried - if we were to handover maemo.org, who would we hand it over to? A legal entity provides an answer to those questions.

Good to hear. But I think the problem is wider than just the binary blobs. It would be great to hear that someone is working on an inventory of all the things we need licences to distribute.
I would strongly prefer that the answer to your question is "anyone". In other words, I would prefer licences where Nokia says anyone is free to distribute the item.
I do not believe a legal entity has a future -- even if one was established initially I think it would very rapidly fall by the wayside and shut itself down once the community declines to very small levels ...
