No need for bak folder, here is how to restore things:

apt-get install --reinstall omap3430-dsp-baseimage-ti omap3430-dsp-libraries-ti gstreamer0.10-openmax gstreamer0.10-dsp

DSP can only play avc baseline profile smoothly, and thats with an oc of 560+ Mhz , most of the downloaded videos are encoded with high profile, hence this behavior is expected.

standerd 720p mpeg4 (non avc/x264) files play very smoothly even at 500 Mhz DSP clock.

I see that i have exactly the same problem as Alfred, while creating loop image my phone reboots, i redownloaded everything 4 times. I tried doing it under backtrack but i'm getting error while it tries to mount /tmp/n950loop (or something like that - i tried yesterday so can't remember). It gives me permission deined. oh, and almost forgot it's live cd linux so may that's a problem. Currently after restoring original files (by apt-get, post 251) i can't play any video except ripped from YT 480p vids (mp4 probably h264)

Make sure you have kernel-power v49 installed before continuing

Make sure you have extras-devel and SDK repos enabled before continuing.
press here while in microb to install extras-devel repo.

Hello Freemangordon, thanks a lot for your wonderful work. I got some problems. As I don't have linux OS, I was trying with N900 itself. The problem is, the device keep getting rebooted in the process. I tried leaving it alone, connecting to charger, etc.
Could please tell me whether I can copy some of the required files into the device through SSH and then run required commands to complete??
Please help. Thank you.

To all who can answer me,
I just downloaded the famous test.avi video, it played very choppy on the stock media player, although it ran perfectly fine in kmplayer set to play via osso-media-server, would ove to know why.
I am using KP49 + 630MHz DSP clock.

P.S. I found out that the stock media player plays it just perfectly if I locked my N900 CPU @1150...hmmm...

You should set 500MHz-600MHz DSP clock for 500 MHz CPU clock and above (and maybe limit CPU between 500 - (your max overclock)). CPU load is very low when playing videos so it goes to low CPU clock( and low DSP max clock).

No way AFAIK, Harmattan rootfs loopback image is 4GB in size and most probably its creation is what causes reboots. You can edit the script so loopback image file to be created on your SD card (if you have one). In the very beginning of the script there is a variable called MYDOCSTMP, you can change it to point to a temporary directory on your SD card. Maybe that will help.

Anyway as soon as I complete last (hopefully) patch for DSP driver I will upload a new script which will contain tweaks that should allow your (and others facing reboots) devices to stay alive under heavy I/O load. Just a little patience.

As people have pointed out, when you record 720p using the gstreamer command the screen is blank during recording.

Is this unfixable (is there some theoretical reason why it can never be done), or is it something that might be possible to do in the future?

also you will have to reinstall kernel-power modules package (because of bridgedriver.ko)
This seems to be a valuable information!
May you add this to the first post or link from there to this post?
