Hey guys!

Recently the new version of maemo 5 OS software was released and I want to update that software. But, I dont want to lose any applications, images, data, contacts, SMS etc.... So, what should I do to prevent any loss of my phone data and apps before updating the maemo 5 new version??

Thanks in advance!

just go to back up and create a new backup file on your micro sd card.you should have the option to back up communications and stuff.

ok but I have 3 questions:

1- Where can I do this back up?

2- Should I move the backup information to a computer?

3-Does the backup save SMS because I read that backup cannt save SMS?

thanks optimistprime!

If you'll update from PR 1.3 to PR 1.3.1, none of your data will be deleted.
Anyway, do a backup from the menu (Backup), if you have a Micro SD card you don't have to move it to a computer, otherwise do it, and yes, the backup will save your SMS if you check to save "Communications".

Those are the latest versions of the Maemo 5 OS.
The last one got released about a week ago. Do you plan to flash your phone, or just do a update?
If you just want to update, backup should be enough. You won't lose any data from the internal memory.
You are welcome!

in the app manager "update category" I read maemo 5 21.2011.38-1.003...so this is an udate action right?I don't know about flashing...could you please tell me about that (what is flashig?why is it for?and how can I do it?)

so you are saying that PR is the same as maemo 5 21.2011...etc?

21.2011.38-1 = PR 1.3.1 which includes a security update (Diginotar)
I guess your current one is 20.2010.36-2 = PR 1.3

003 is just a regional code.
Flashing wipes all your data and reinstalls the OS.
So if you do just the update, it's totally safe.

And yes, this is a update action.

ok thanks a lot mirciox for these information...now it's more clear for me!
so why should someone do a flashing is that helpful for the phone?
one more question mirciox, in order to move the backup data to a computer...will that be done by a simple "copy paste" action? and after the update is done i'll move them again to the phone and restore the data?or is this way is wrong?

thanks mirciox... sry took a lot from your time!

No problem at all.
Yes, you can copy the backup file to the PC and after that back to the phone, you will be able to restore the backup.
Flashing helps if you want a new start with the phone, or if you bricked your device.
If you flash it, it will be just like new (no user data on it).
