Did you issue your command as root?
2/3Code:root ifconfig
Have you got anything else installed, that did not come with the reflash?
Have you done any tweaking like battery patches and whatnot?
Have you tried fsck?

Normally I don't suggest reflashing as way of solving issues, but if this N900 was just bought, I would suggest to do full Vanilla EMMC+FIASCO reflash. See wiki article "Reflashin" for instructions.
I have flashed it to latest firmware, and I still have problems.
1. WLAN - no network card. I can't find any network, or search. In terminal, ifconfig does not displays wireless network card (WLAN0)
2. Terminal - hangs sometime. I issue sudo gainroot, and it hangs, and nothing happens. Sometime it works.
3. File Manager gets stucked, and i can't shut it down. It displays, not responding, and can't kill it.
