Hi GA.
I would normally think so, I have a HTC Hermes/Cingular 8525 that seems pretty tolerant to charging however I want, whether it's on or off. But seeing these folks with the problems from just recieved C.C. and Buy Now (or whatever it is) IT's, I thought it might be prudent to not force the issue.

So the Nokias can be hooked up to the charger at anytime with impunity? Whether they're on or off? I've only hooked mine to the charger while it's off so far. And unhooked it before turning it on.
I like to err on the side of caution.
Thanks
K

Yes, charge it just like you would charge a laptop. On, off, whenever and for however long you want (it's bad to discharge Li-ion batteries too often), just avoid high temperatures.

I'm not sure about the recent on/off issues, it seems more like it's either a bad batch of something or another, and/or ignorance on the part of some users. I really don't know. So if you have a system that works for you, by all means, keep using it. But I've been charging my N800 pretty much however I want for the past year (minus 8 days ) and haven't had a significant drop in battery life.

Cool.
I just plugged it in while it's still on (Knuckles are getting bloody from all the wood-knocking :P )
Electronics can be funny critters. I have a popular handheld Ham radio that needs the DC cord plugged in before the wall wart is plugged in. Many reports of damage if done the other way around.

I just LOVE this stuff...

I also got my N800 from Circuitcity order from online and received it the 27th and also noticed today it wouldn't start. The blue light turned on for a moment then had to pull battery out to start it. I will keep an eye on this if not this is going back for another.

Well, zeusenergy, I got most of my idea about the meaning of words changing from my experience of many years as an editor, for academic publications, gambling mags, and chess sites, like for Garry Kasparov, for example. Certainly not from dictionaries.

And surely you can imagine a conversation in which the meaning of a term changes while it is happening. How about "I'm going to hit you with my gzormplat!" That doesn't seem very threatening at first, but when it becomes clear that the speaker is waving a heavy, spiked club, you might feel a thrill of fear. Maybe the wave-er just made the word up, but it can be used just fine.

I'm certain you were trying to help, General. Lots of people are *****s on certain subjects -- me, for example, so you aren't alone. The insurgents who post outside recommended parameters keep multiplying, though, so maybe your approach isn't totally effective.

Good for you, but calling people stupid is still a rude thing to do.

I never said it was*, but your conclusions aren't really drawn from particularly good data. My methods here address the issue on a case-by-case basis, (kinda like fighting a fire by pinching out all the floating embers) which doesn't have a particularly large effect on the issue in the large scale. Think of how many people ex-newbies might still be posting redundant threads if they weren't instructed in the ways of forum etiquette, though.†

I've put forward and contributed to a number of reasonable solutions to the problem, but they all require either a concerted effort on the part of the community (the wiki is gaining steam, but still sadly lacking) or a varying amount of work from Reggie.

In order for things to get better, we're either going to have to wait for the stream of newbies to slow down and join the ranks of useful members, watch all the senior members slowly disappear out of disinterest and frustration, or really put forth a concerted effort for change.

Really, though, this is all a lot of hot air until that happens. One of the older "solution" topics on the subject needs to be revisited, and somebody needs to draft a letter to Reggie or volunteer as orchestrator for a community effort.

*Mostly this is my way of letting off a little steam instead of just abandoning this place to the hordes and their supporters.

†Teach a man to fish and all that, it's really a good service to the poster, despite your and their objections of rudeness and unhelpfulness.

I think the primary objection here is not that etiquette should not be observed, but more that those attempting to encourage it are being jerks hugely out of proportion to the perceived infractions. Someone earlier likened it to not wiping one's feet before entering another's home. That is true, but had a person entered without wiping and Technut responded by making some snide, sarcastic, self-righteous comment (as he did here), he should expect to be called a ***** (and worse).

Etiquette is a two way street. It seems as though some here need to be reminded of that.

Hell, maybe they just don't care, in which case, STFU, *****s.

I thought it funny that i never got any manual in the box, just a quick start guide leaflet? the box was sealed but just with a plane white sticker with the word "sealed" on it. I thought the box looked like a return as soon as i saw it.

I wonder if i get someone elses returned unit? I bought mine from Play UK.

these members helping out are computer people, and probably not customer service guys so give them their moment to fume and move on.
there are a lot of new n8xx users, a d the influx is refreshing since we know that there is a user base out there that is worth supporting.
get a new unit. i m never pleased to have a gadget i need to fix to use, especially if it is new.
