Yeah, i never really got the chance to try symbian, by the time i was into the smartphone market symbian phone were way too expensive to buy here in the US. still, the n8 is still pretty high priced for its age. other than that i would have boughten one. hopefully they dont kill the OS, id like to try it someday.
one thing that ive always wanted on multitasking though is keeping a youtube video open while other things/reading email (not a actually video, but music, so i dont have to download it). that would be "true multitasking". imo, and just badass
the apps on the n9 arent really even as bad as some people say, some just need updated and maybe a few more "useless" apps like netflix (i dont use anyways), and some others. most stuff you can do on the web browser anyways, like facebook, twitter, rss, etc etc. so i dont see why so many people complain about the apps xD maybe its just me, but when i had my HTC Amaze i had like 10 games (deadspace, GTA 3, etc) and i literally opened them once and got bored.. im still interested in what google has to bring in the next update though

huh, i have symbian devices since 2006. and i had some HTCs with windows mobile (even fixing it here used to cost as much as new phone...for example, flat cable for tytn I was like used tytn I...and i am talking just about one tiny cable,,,(10cm)) but i give respect to windows mobile, it was multitasking, about symbian, for more than two years i really don't have enough of time for phones, and i was somehow putting aside symbian, but last night, i was writing some code in python (on device) and i actually saw how fast E7 is comparing to n9/50. app runs like instantly...no delay...once i got argued with guy because i said that controlling apps are faster on symbian than on pc...yes it really is...there's no delay in switching between apps, there's no glitch, there's no "stucked" thingy....it just runs.
yes, most of symbian devices are 128MB of ram and e7 have 256 and it is main reason all runs so fast, but, really, symbian was something like running windows nt (win2k - 2ooo) on dual core pc and ui is like having win7...
if there would be symbian port for n9/50 i would install it right now(but with dual boot
)
you must try it, n8 have great camera and it's like sister to e7. it can't play youtube in background because it's designed to pause all videos while you are not watching them (eg, you get sms or phonecall...) but this can be patched...i think that two best things that ever existed on mobile phones came from nokia (symbian and harmattan) so, it's really sad to see that they're killing it and why are they doing it? - no reason...
either they have something that will shock us all once is unleashed or it's just being unable to compete with iOS, but there's something we don't know.
once, i've heard that elop, when came to nokia lab, saw device that were very innovative and that would would be amazed with it (this is not something i have references to, it's something i've heard).
i am really not much into nokia and such (company plans...i don't track it at all), but, as soon as nokia announced that they are making symbian opensource, i knew that they are killing it/replacing it...(my posts are still on symbian-freak forum).
so, as i am aware, elop got nokia in state where he had to do something to save it...former team (who actually introduced PlatSec and made agreements with operators......) are held responsible (by my side) for their fail. i was there when nokia fought us because we was hacking platsec...it was literally like war, they did almost everything to stop it, but once hole is found, there was no patch.
if there's any way to get symbian device (even n95) get it and play with it, it's very nice mix of smartphone and telephone.
i saw post by some guy here, can't really digg it now and i am not enough member to know who wrote it, but guy had better plan for nokia than nokia's management...it's sad to see WP as top os, it's sad to see that n900 was only device with maemo5...really really sad...

well i started getting into smartphones around early 2009, and i bought the G1 since it was ubber cheap (120$ craigslist).
you cant buy high end symbian phones on craigslist in the US (at least in Missouri). and i just now started buying phones off of Ebay (where i got my n9). so thats why ive never owned one, TBH ive never even seen a Nokia smartphone besides the one i hold.. none of my friends barely know what Nokia is besides those old go phones lol
im not going to lie, i probably could have got the N8 but back then i was into android and thought "oh, the N8 specs arent high, so it probably sucks". now i realize hardware isnt the most important thing.
i didnt like how android was becoming, thats why i dropped my HTC amaze. it was all spec wars.. (my phone has .4GHz more than your phone!!!)
software > hardware.
ive always been a little Nokia fanboy even though i never owned one, and now i finally have one![]()
seriously though, my BIGGEST complaint is that the n9 doesnt have a equalizer (and sigma doesnt really help). thats really it.. and no free voip like android has (gtalk)

on topic. i came from the htc amaze and tons of other android devices and i cant be more happy with this phone. android is so un-stable its not even funny. even with ICS. constant FCs, etc
android integrated task manager is horrid as well, even if you close stuff it stays open in the background. i think harmattan has the best multitasking ive used.
