Hello, i am a new N9 user in Hong Kong ( and i but it from Mainland China). N9 is amazing but i found a problem.

When i add Alex Yiu in my Contact with the phone number 12345678. I found it works when He calls me, the name can show it (but not the phone number).

However, when he texts me, the phone does not display his name, but the phone number with the area code ahead. It becomes
85212345678 (Because i live in Hong Kong).

I get confused that what happens to my phone ? It is disfunction? or because that is a Chinese version of N9, and it happens when i use in Hong Kong? Is there any setting that can improve this situation? Thank You.

usually its good idea to enter full international number as contact, like in finland I've added my friends as +3585012345678, that way it always displays the name correct, as the matching algo also matches the shorter subset of numbers ok. Ie if 12345678 calls me in finland the algo will match the last 8 numbers in my contact (and ignore the beginning part).

The matching algo can differentiate between mobile phone vendors / even individual software components used in a mobile. (For example old Siemens/Benq phones just compared the last 7 digits or so.)

Best thing is to always store in international format, as said by PP.

this may be a stupid question, but could the first in which phone numbers are saved have any impact on syncing messages via Nokia Suite? Message Syncing repeatedly fails for me even on the N9 official beta release of Suite.

Yes, i can add the phone number with area code in my Contact, when somebody call me, it would only display his name. But when i click 852+12345678, i can directly call. It is inconvenient.

Now my solution seems so stupid. I store the 852+12345678 in Contact A, for message him and display the correct name in SMS, and the 12345678 for calling him directly......

You can just use the full international format for calling him directly, no need to use shorter number (its not cheaper in any way). So you can just delete all short numbers (or convert them all to international format).

But now my question is that i have saved the international format in my phone, like +85212345678, but when somebody calls me, the phone does not identify caller's name, but only show the phone number.. What happens ?

it should show the callers name ok, if 12345678 is calling, it should match the substring from the longer format just fine.

Hmm, then there is bug somewhere if your running PR1.2.

Then it seems that your only option is to have 2 number entries per contact.
