I have poked around but haven't found a way to have a program launch when the machine is turned on. I am tired of having to search for GPE Calendar every time I reboot and want it to always be running. Is this possible?

You can create an init.d script to start the app at the end of the boot sequence but that might be rather difficult if you're new to Linux.
Or you can go into the control panel, select panels, organize apps and move Calendar to the top of the menu or create a custom menu with Calendar and other most used apps. That is how you organize apps on the app menu.
You can also try installing Telescope or Personal Launcher. Telescope opens a fullscreen icon based grid of app icons and is uses the same organization as the app menu. Personal Launcher lets you add icons for specific apps on your desktop.
