I think there's simply a bug in the radio interface layers. I sometimes have system-ui show that I don't have coverage, but this is cleared up by entering and exiting flight mode.

more detail, if i toggle flight mode after the "lockup," the signal bars clear and it shows not connected to the network and never connects again until i restart. The worst part of the bug is the at a glance the phone works, but not until you try to make a call or use data do you find out.
What country firmware are other people running in the states? and not having any issues with connectivity.
