Seems like I found the bug. Swyping in german kills the keyboard, for whatever reason. Is there any way to reinstall the german dictionary?
apt-get install l10n-pack-de --reinstall

thank you so much, clearing the config file did work. You guys are one of the reasons I gifted my galaxy s2 to my nephew and keep using this awesome phone =)
