Hi all,

The N810 is getting closer to perfect for me (thanks free, for SCID). One remaining wish is to do the NYT crossword puzzle which requires a Java or flash plugin (to solve w/friends, when you can save it and return to it later).

Searches of the forum seem to indicate that sometimes java applets work, sometimes they don't, and I can't figure out how fiddle w/"things".

Has anyone got this site working, or could give me a tip for how to try?

Sorry if the answer is already somewhere on the forum, but it wasn't obvious...

A Java engine has not been ported to the IT yet.

Do they have a Flash version of the player for crossword subscribers now?

When my wife needed a new laptop, I almost bought her an N800 since she used it most frequently for Times crosswords, but not having Java (and no client for the downloaded files like Across Lite) was the ultimate deal-breaker for her.

Honestly, this seems like a killer game for the tablets. Anyone feel like porting KrossWordPlayer to Maemo?

well, this just shows my ignorance. I don't know if their page requires Java or flash (or the difference between the two). They also have a stand-alone program "across lite" for linux, but the binary doesn't run on the N810.

I may have a crossword puzzle compatible w/ across lite puzzles shortly. I don't want to make any promises, however. I'm working on it in my spare time.

^ Looking forward to it, if it works out. Thanks. Low-tech entertainment all the way! I feel myself getting dumber when playing games.

Gary this would be awesome. I just got back from my first laptop-free conference, and I'm pleased to report that the N810 did almost everything I needed it to do. (Still can't use it to give my talk, but that's about it.) But I did miss my crossword puzzles during some of the slower talks ;-)

if Wine will run on OS2008 then you should be able to run the Windows Mobile version of BeCrossword or even the full version of Across Lite on the tablet.

Speed is not a huge issue for this sort of use, so my question is will Wine run on the tablet?

For me the inability to do my crosswords would be a complete deal breaker. I think...???

OK, I answered my own question about Wine on a Nokia tablet...just no...just plain no...no sir...just plain no...

Soooo, I emailed the new owners of BeCrossword and inquired about a port for the Nokia tablets...ya never know. I pointed them to this thread.

OK, I did some more reading here on the site. Was not aware of the Garnet VM for the N800 at all. I am willing to bet that the PalmOS version of BeCrossword will run on the N800 within the GarnetVM.

BeCrossword is a very inexpensive program at like $7 or $8 and it reads the Across Lite (.puz) format files. I actually prefer it to the actual Across Lite program.

A full actual port to OS2008 would be far better no matter if it is BeCrossword or Across Lite.

From what I can tell BeCrossword was written for PalmOS 3.x and above so there should not be any fancy external libraries needed which might prevent it from running in the emulator.

I know now someone will tell me the emulator no longer works, right?
