At first I didn't care so much, since the N800 only supported standard SD cards natively (I'm not tech savvy enough for anything but minor things). But then I got the 2008 upgrade so my N800s now have full SDHC support, and I decided to venture into the unknown and install MPlayer.

Oh, man. My N800 turned almost as exciting as a Victoria's Secret model in my bed. Mplayer allowed me to use my already-converted Divx files. And it plays great!!! With 2 16GB cards, I can have all of Entourage, Star Wars, and other movies and shows, with plenty of space left over for porn too!!!

What to do!?!?!? My N810 has a measly 10GB max by comparison, but it's really 6GB because I don't want to permanently have the mini-micro adapter in the slot.

Oh, what am I to do!??!?!

I'd look for external storage: http://www.internettablettalk.com/wi..._using_OS_2008

I know it's not as easy to do with the N810, but I think it's possible. Baring that you could look into a wifi based network drive. (like mybook world edition) *disclaimer not 100% sure on direct compatibility, and obviously lacking in portability.... unless you can access through Internet.

Wait, it will catch up eventually, I think the 12GB microSDHC has already been announced.

They have, but they will never be able to catch up. By the time microsdh is 16GB, sdhc will be 32, and so on. But as the previous poster suggested, i'd recommend host mode and a 32GB stick or something like that. divx plays fine straight off usb, although i suggest transferring first to save battery

No, they'll catch up. At some point, no one will want SDHCs any more, and microSDHCs in adapters will serve our "legacy" needs. But that's at least 1-2 years off.

I've seen some BT hard drive thingie on engadget... But I didn't pay attention; I didn't need one.

Maybe, but by the time they do there'll be Yet Another New Damned Flash Memory Format.

Then again, CF is still around so hopefully SD will last at least as long...

Personally I dislike the newer card forms. They're just too damned small!
My fav. form factor is MemoryStick, but alas that is a Sony thing so they won't let anybody else use it.
SD is like MS Duo, which are acceptibly sized.

These newer sizes are getting ridiculous. Seriously you OEMs - Anything I could accidentally snort up my nose is Too Damned Small okay?!?!

- hmm, my n800 running os2007 works just fine w/my 8gb SDHC cards?

(IOW, not sure what you mean about 'only supported standard SD cards natively)...

- but yes, your post makes a good point, and yet another reason i'm glad i chose the n800 (could have had either, but n810 == 2x cost of n800 right now)

- time will tell... i just went through my CF card junk box and found 4mb, 8mb, 15mb, 32mb, 64mb, 96mb, 192mb, and 256mb cards... none of which i use anymore...

:-(

I was transferring a 2GB microSD card between phones atwork when I dropped it. It took three of us ten minutes to find that sucker on the dark carpet, everybody nervous of stepping on it! It's funny now, but not then. Now when I take a card out I do so very carefully over a white surface where it can't fall, bounce and fall down a crevice!

Instead of bigger cards, you could:

a) use Orb or WeBot to stream from a desktop computer (probably YOUR desktop, but who's to say?)

b) use other Internet-based storage. Sure, you have to be connected to use it, but you'll run out of batteries long before you view everything on your 8GB card anyway.

This may not work for you, but it's worth considering.
