I want to preface this by saying that I DID search the forums for answers to my questions BEFORE posting. If I'm posting something that's already been discussed, it's out an inability to punch in the right search terms, not malice or intended laziness, and I'm sorry. That being said...

I was trying to install Python2.5 back when everyone was having the infamous misspelled "repostory" issue, and was able to install it after I edited my repository names like everyone else. However, now that I have just upgraded from an n800 to an n810 (!!!!), I find myself unable to install Python once again.

On the pymaemo site, it says that Python is no longer available in application manager. Bummer. I tried to follow their instructions. Thye said I had to be in RD mode using the following command in X-Terminal-
sudo flasher --enable-rd-mode
When I do this, I get prompted for a password. Does anyone know what the default password is? I have never set one. Nor did I on my n800, and I noted the same behavior. I found another forum that said "rootme" granted root access, but it didn't work.

I just really, REALLY want to install Python. If anyone can help me do that, I would be SO appreciative.

THANKS

Relax... I don't think this has been discussed before, as it only happened very recently with the newest release of maemo-python (I don't quite get why they chose to make that change BTW, but it's sure to generate some headaches :-). To make things worse they provide the hardest, most roundabout possible method for manual install.

If you want Python to run an app that was programmed in Python, just install that app (Canola, Erming, Kerez etc.) and in theory python-maemo should be pulled down first as a "dependency" (and you should see a total download size much bigger than the app in question).

If you want to use the manual method you can skip the RD-mode hassle by installing the readily available "BecomeRoot" package. Then in xterm you can type "sudo gainroot", and after that issue the "apt-get install" command.

Where do you get the "BecomeRoot" package from? Maemo.org?
OK, so I searched Maemo for this and nothing, however I did find under "Download/Systems - 2nd page" an icon that says " a simple way to locally capture root" but no install. So when I click on the title, it takes me to an "instruction page" which says "If you want to SSH root@device from ANOTHER device, just TEMPORARILY install an appropriate authorized_keys files in /Home\user\ssh\authorized_keys before installing this package

"Dude, for a Newbie, what does this mean?"

Anyhow, it goes on to say, in a box at the bottom of the screen (by Mike Lococo):
"This entry isn''t reguarding an application and should be deleted. It's a set of instructions for manually gaining root access to a tablet, and should be in the wiki instead"

My point being; "Just to get an app installed I feel like I'm asking for large donations or directions in some distant land, and nobody wants to help." Things shouldn't be this difficult, really, its too much.

INdT (Nokia in Brazil) who do all the Python stuff told me that they are working to improve this situation.

Hi

I tried the recommended Python install route, but got lots of dependency errors. I have followed your advice and installed Canola 2. A yes, all of sudden Python 2.5.1 is installed! One question: Will Python be automatically be uninstalled if I uninstall Canola?

Thanks!
