Assuming they don't care about explaining things here, which sadly seems to be most Sailors (but I won't hold that against them -no pun intended).

Sometimes you can't do this due to legal issues (e.g., Switzerland).

Rough translation: We´re nevertheless planning to update the hardware during the second half of next year to keep us in the hardware competition, Saarnio concludes.
IMHO this is quite an unfortunate statement (notice how polite I am).
What is the point of announcing a successor before selling the original device? You can only achieve lower sales of the first device and disappoint those who have already preordered.

That's the tactic Elop'd been practicing over the last 2-3 years in order to sink Nokia.

From Ilta-Sanomat: The first batch of phones is on it´s way to Finland at the moment.

Processor seems to be Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 Dual-core 1.4 GHz

And invitations (apparently more than 450) to the launch have been already sent, at least some of them. Of all those who have registered to the event, the 450 who ordered first will get in. The queue to buy the phone opens at 17 o´clock and the doors/queue (the queue is apparently inside) open to the public at 18 o´clock. The first phone will be sold at 19 o´clock.

While I don't think it's bad that they're already thinking about a successor & aiming for 2nd-half 2014, I do think it's silly to be talking about it so early.
Also completely disagree about the claim made about Elop...

It's always like ground hog day all over again with dave, we have to re-explain what's been explained countless times. No dave, it won't be a hard-core specs beast, not unless you want to pay much more than the equivalent Android specs beast, & not too many people will. There'll be better "bang for buck" next yr (if they're still around), but they still won't be at a point where they can offer the same value when it comes to hw specs alone.

I just got an invitation to the jolla launch event, even though I'm not from finland. So it seems they are given to people from the first preorder batch regardless of country.

Unfortunately It's a workday so I can't make it (also it would be a bit to expensive to fly to helsinki from germany for a few hours)

If you can wait until half next year, you are correct. I know Android buyers who buy phones more often.

We're on the same page here - planning is great, takling about it in this situation is quite short sighted.

On the other hand, if he'd say there's a new device coming in 12 months, it might strengten confidence that this is not the last device to be seen.

Let me elaborate on the 'Elop' part - I'm well aware of other things Elop's done (most likely on purpose), but when you read mainstream media analyzing the fall of Nokia, they surprisingly agree on one thing - one of the main causes was announcing future devices before launching the current ones. That is the sole thing I am comparing here.

Do you still get the option to place an order & have it sent to you if you can't go?
And there's still no evidence that $0 pre-orders are being invited too, or those outside EU ($0 or not).

I'll respond to that later time permitting, low priority though as it's quite off-topic...
