When I was trying to update my KDE (n800, os2008, on mmc2 (internal 4 gb)) and following the instruction: (as a root user)
cd /
tar jxvf KDE358.tar.bz2

I got "invalid option......". My tar is BusyBox v1.6.1 (2007-09-27). When I checked the option of my default tar, I found out that it doesn't have the j option. Later on I used /usr/bin/tar (this version actually is an older version, GNU 1.5) and tried to do the same thing, but I missed typing something, so it didn't get through with installing KDE356.tar.bz2. When I corrected the typing and did /usr/bin/tar again, I got something says: use bzip2recover. I couldn't find where I could down that executable for n800.

Pleas help.

you need tar from penguinbaits page or that one from apt (apt-get -d install tar, fetch it and unpack it manually IIRC).

Actually you need tar and bzip2

you also need to be sure that the tarball is the correct size?

KDE358.tar.bz2

You should check out KDE358v2.tar.bz2 since your installing to boot from SD anyway.

Look at www.tablethacker.com for a link to tar and bzip2 and new version of KDE

Thank you for all the help you guys have given to me.

After I got penguinbait's tar and tried again, I still got corrupted file warning. I think I found the problem. For some reason, when I downloaded the KDE358v2.tar.bz2 from the website www.tablethacker.com, I couldn't get the whole file (whether I downloaded to WinXP Pro or directly to n800). The size of the file should be 316121 bytes, but I only got part of the file; sometimes it's 250KD, sometimes 240KB....).

I'll try to download it again.

By the way, I was unable to "apt-get -d install tar" (reinstall the tar). I just used it this way (root user) /home/user/tar jxvf /media/mmc1/Download/Kde/KDE358v2.tar.bz2

Thank you guys.

-=-=-= Update 2/1/2008
I used the menu button to select tool/download the file, it tool a long time (1 hr or 3 hrs?) to get it done. I used tar jtvf option to check the bz2 file and made sure it's ok (it took a long time to finish checking). I finally installed the bz2 file and the SUP file (about 50 min to 1 hr to finish tar-ing). My Kde v2 is running now. I have a lot to learn about this new version. First of all, I have to find out where the virtual keyboard is. On the Kde v1, the virtual keyboard is around handy. The KDE on N800 is really a masterpiece. Now I can catch up with you guys on enjoying the KDE V2.

I finally had a chance to update my "Step-by-Step Newbie Instructions" for loading KDE on a n800.

Thanks everyone who provided feedback!

Did anybody make a ckecksum md5sum file of "KDE358v2.tar.bz2" so that after downloading it could be verified? May be it could be add to the download list. I guess a lot of people - including myself don't know if it was downloaded correctly -I'm now on my 4th trial. Keep up the good work

thanks

and this should be displayed
f6bc9fd93b695fb02dab14b6a140b90c KDE358v2.tar.bz2

12. Move the KDE and SUP files to root < / >. In my first attempt I "copied" vs. "moved" the tarballs - big mistake. That leaves behind huge tarballs in "Documents" that take up valuable SD card space.

# mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/KDE358.tar.bz2 /KDE358.tar.bz2
# mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/SUP.tgz /SUP.tgz
It is not necessary to move the tarballs as shown in step 12. Just add "-C /" to the end each of the tar commands in step 13 of the instructions and execute tar in the download directory, or provide tar with the full path to the tarballs.

Optional - to use GNU tar by default, put it in /usr/local/bin and edit ~/.profile to prepend /usr/local/bin to the path. My path for root looks like (or looked like before the KDE install changed it - warning to KDE testers):

PATH=/root/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11
export PATH
Thanks for the instructions.

Phil

Is there way to hack Ubuntu Mobile for N810 consumption?

Or maybe KDE 4.0.1?
