The N900 is my UMTS modem with a data-only contract-free SIM on T-Mobile (Germany) where I pay once per every day I use it and have a "flat" rate (throttled after 1 GB) on that day.
I don't know about the situation in the US, though, but I imagine similar data plans do exist.
