There is precisely ZERO chance of that happening (for Symbian or Maemo) regardless of any petition. Which is why I (and others) are working hard to reverse engineer key pieces of the N900 software stack to understand how they work and so they can be changed.
I am 99.9% done with MCE (one function is not quite there but it may not matter) and work is being done to reverse engineer the closed source pulseaudio blobs among other things.

The difference is that in those areas it benefits Microsoft to support those things (especially when a competitor like Google isn't). Even their efforts to support Linux in the cloud are necessary because if they dont, everyone will go to Amazon or someone else for their cloud needs.
On the other hand, supporting anything for the N900 has zero benefit to Microsoft (since supporting the N900 will not earn them any future revenues and if anything, will hurt them)

It undermines their business in that it benefits a competitor to their Windows Phone offerings in the form of the Neo900. (and potentially gives other competitors access to some of the things that made the N900 good)
Not to mention any 3rd party code they used and cant release for that reason. And any proprietary algorithms/info they cant (or wont) reveal (e.g. the secret algorithms used for the audio stuff or the secrets of how to talk to the cellular modem or the secrets of how various bits of 3rd party hardware work or the secrets of how the N900 talks to Microsoft email servers (details that Microsoft doesn't want to share for obvious reasons)
There may even be things they cant release for legal reasons (e.g. the wl1251-cal daemon used to pass configuration information to the WiFi chip, releasing the code for that might make it possible to configure the WiFi chip to use different country settings than they should be using which would then cause the chip to act in ways that are illegal)

It's been 3 years since the last update and since then we've seen Maemo servers shut down and go through a change of ownership. At this stage, I'd say there's a good chance that the infrastructure that was used to maintain Maemo source code has already been junked with the code being lost forever.

Any other entity possibly...but M$ would keep it ...perhaps to study it...for many reasons fathomable and not.
Indeed ...they may even say it was purged ...when it was not.
I concur that it is sitting in their hidden vaults (somewhat akin to the Vatican's vaults) along with all kinds of treasures that may or may not ever see the light of day.
It isn't a dead on example...but kinda close...
lookieloo at what happened with Boxee Box Crew (xbmc variant smart tv device...better than appletv, googletv or any of the other smarttv devices frankly...kinda ...the n900 of the smart tv universe )
Great idea...great product (til they stupefied and really mucked up their last innovation) but lucked out...kinda-sorta...Smashsum (samsung) said "looky what we got here" ...made them a deal they couldn't refuse...bought 'em...bam-gone.
'fore they completely shut the lights out and packed the last of their equipment for the move to the new lab facilities...some kind soul released some data that enabled the opening up of the Boxee Box ....now a few souls run that (Boxee +) ...I got a boxee...great tool. installed a xbmc sdcard hack and boxee + for it too...(haven't used it for a bit since I've been using xbmc (t400 to one of my tv's)....huh...actually I really should check in on the forum ...see how things are....
Anywho...you know Smashsum will most definitely utilize what they bought and future tech will have that Boxee smell to 'em...
Anyway there is my rambling story parallel
M$ most likely hasn't flushed anything...
Tho we all may wish they had...
I'm sure the Biopsy on the poor screaming maemo stuffs will be a complete success.....
so be prepared for the launch of an evil alternate n900 maemo twin though....
kinda like evil alternate Captain Kirk....but probably worse
Update: just logged in to one of the boxee hacks forums...alive and kickin.....pluggin away at bugs, fixes, updates etc....still.

There is nothing about the N900 or Maemo that Microsoft would have any interest in. The hardware is old and obsolete, the design is nothing like what Microsoft wants for Windows Phone (does anyone even make hw-keyboard phones for Windows Phone?). The software is totally different in the way it works to anything Microsoft has (the kernel is different, the middle-ware is different, the UI is different, its all different)
About the only thing from Maemo or the N900 Microsoft might want would be any patents and it would only want those so it can shakedown its competitors for more royalties.

Time and again....it comes right back to this fundamental.
To initiate, maintain and grow something good...and most importantly ...keep it.
Don't put your faith, hope, money and trust in a corp. to do it.

They both have their own (completely and understandably justifiable) motives, agendas, politiks, issues of accountability to investors/ shareholders, pandering/ catering to multitudes of jackdaw consumers with a desire for pretty shiny things (as well as so many more base survival issues) and many more priorities which [at some or many point(s)] are and/ or aren't at odds with what that populace really wants or needs.
Consequently many talk of "reliability", "stability", "longevity" and many more "-ity's" ...
well ..sanity dictates...corp. and gov't are the last places to look for it.
You'd think (as an intelligent species) we would have caught on by now...after so many disappointments by the same organizational models over and over again.

Invest in good people.

Invest in your community.
