Precisely that, maintaining sockets. There's even a XMPP extension for this http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0198.html .
This XEP requires no interaction with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) [16].

Can someone answer a question about Ubuntu touch?
...about the bq M10 this morning and I saw this:
"Traditional Xorg-based software runs on the tablet in a confined, secure container using Xmir."

Does that mean that Xorg-based software is sandboxed and cannot open critical system files read-write so I can modify the device's behavior?

No. I meant of keeping a socket open. Most of the services in the N9 were purplelib and telepathy, thus XMPP and the like, right? I'm invariably wrong, but seeking clarification nonetheless.
