I would pay the remaining cost, for all the Neo900 devices I pre-ordered. I understand that Neo900 is way out-of-date, but there is lack of qwerty sliders, Linux phones, mobile devices with resistive touchscreen, and similar, in modern market. Neo900 even supports 4G (see modems available), and it has nice camera (better cameras have come out since then, but most of them are on closed-source devices).

Besides, cost of each Neo900 device includes not only Neo900 device itself, but also N900 motherboard, if I remember correctly. It encourages experimentation, just like the Neo900's hackerbus does.

And I have heard of no other phone/computer manufacturer who listens to consumers. I like Nokia 8110 4G, but I don't expect Nokia to listen to my feedback and make it available in silver, or to include RGB backlight for the keys. At the same time, I already have a white housing for a Nokia N900 on my shelves - similar to https://www.maxbhi.com/full-body-pan...900-white.html . And Neo900 will probably have RGB backlight for keyboard (not sure about status of that).

In short, I don't like to give up. Especially when there seems to be no other company seeking to maintain devices across decades and centuries. Every other phone-making company seems to like making single-use closed-source difficult-to-repair boring devices.

I think to achieve this accolade, the company would actually have to have "manufactured" and supplied a product. Yes they give the impression of listening to their potential customers, but that is easy if you don't action it.!

The problem is, now it's too late. There are now so few people interested in this project that the remaining costs for each of your devices is in the range of 100'000 - 500'000 Euros.

Well, let's see. Probably not a 100% valid poll as it is not by the development team but it should give at least a general idea.

Disagree. The existing cost estimate is around 1000EUR, with aim for about 1000 devices altogether. Even if there are only 200 orders remaining (and that's a very pessimistic approach), each device would cost around 5000 EUR (it hinges on the premise that each of customers would pay for five devices instead of one, and then the redundant devices could be sold to the second wave of customers/collectors). I pre-ordered 7 devices, and pre-paid 2880EUR [just checked on my neo900.org account]. Sure, 32120 EUR [could be less, if interest rates increase initial donation of 2880EUR over years] is a lot, but I could probably (depends on currency conversion rates) pay it... Especially if I start getting a salary (I am currently a student, and thus slowly eating into my Savings account).

Disclaimer: it's my personal opinion, and calculations were done without access to any data about pre-orders.

Is the initial estimate of "actual" people who invested in pre ordering.
It isn't a matter of doubting...or highly doubting...
it is a certainty...
all of the 200 people who will not pay another penny for a finished device tomorrow are most certainly less myself, Ken, and a few others who have piped up to state as much...
within the last 48 hours..

How many will pipe up in the coming days, weeks and months to voice their yea or nay ...
How many are now currently having real life issues and cannot commit to the costs..
How many have long departed the forum or abandoned hope of seeing completion of the neo and simply moved on...

Hell...
How many have flippin' died in the last 5 years..and won't be ever seeing the completion or in-completion of this project...for that matter ..
Those numbers have yet to be figured.

As the days weeks and months follow...
The numbers of "yeas" and "nays" and the number of those who have simply abandoned the forum or their neo investment ..
will show...by the voicing or lack of voicing ...their position.

I like to bet on sure things when I gamble at the casino..
So it's blackjack for me..with odds almost 50-50..the best one can hope for..
And I wouldn't put any money on there being the 200 people you estimate.

under a 100 to possibly 50 and under..
is my best guess for the numbers (CURRENTLY AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME) who will follow through and commit the sums of money expected for an exaggeratedly overdue and now outdated (spec-wise..) device.

But most certainly it isn't 200 people now wiki..
So when the final guesstimate is in..
Then tabulate the expected cost of the number of people who are still committed vs those who are not / abandoned their commitment
and the projected additional cost per device to pick up the slack of those who are not committed any longer ...
said cost per device.. of those individuals who are no longer committed...will increase the given end cost the committed individuals will have to bear...naturally... per device accordingly..
So I would wait for that final guesstimate before tabulating what the end cost is going to be...
rather than "counting your neo's before they are hatched..."

(actually that adage needs amending considering the situation..it should be "don't be counting your pre-order chickens before they come back to the hen house to see if they will even lay an admission of stating they would pay the remainder..")

Due to the lag of people for publishing news this is not the right place to get some.
The only place is irc chat right now.

The project partialy failed = means a total fail in timeline and total fail in informing / updating the poeple who invested money in this.
So you need to look for informations by yourself which is more time consuming like looking at git, reading irc logs and so on but it is possible.

For some people it is not acceptable and they dont want the device anymore. This is understanable but i feel some of them did not know what a high risk project it is and how optimistic the timeline was.
So these people should stop crying, your invested money is lost. See it as an experience to estimate similar future projects and the risk of investing money.

It is still an outstanding project because it is an openhardware phone in development and has some intended unique properties (discussed here many times).
It is not dead at the moment and nobody will know if it succeeds and when it will be to call it a succeess or failure. I guess the chances are very low like the money in this project but I really don't know.

The price for the material value... we don't need to discuss.

Many layout design fixes were done in this year, so at the moment there is fresh energy into the project.
From a talented layouter who has a high interest to get this finished because he want the device for his own.

Regarding Joerg he is mentally and physically not in his top form and also not 100% into this project anymore but he is not gone.
About a statement of him? I don't know it seems it is not going to happen here. You should accept this.

This is my own opinion made by observation about the project. So I could also be totally wrong with my estimation.

BTW I also invested money but I don't cry, money is only paper it is better to believe in good people and have friends you can trust and count on.
So create real values with your time on earth and not collecting only paper.

I really really wish people would stop using a present tense for something that hasn't come about.

as far as the project continuing with r+d ..
but the project being a collapsed one from the stand of investors and their pre order...

then it should be coming directly from the project team head.

it is a low low thing not to at least take enough responsibility to issue a statement and just fcuk off into the sunset...

What is needed from the neo team at this time:

1- There needs to be some official statement from the head of this team as to the state of the project.

2- The number of updated pre order committed individuals to assess the end cost to them..

3- If the project is considered a success from a r+d standpoint and they are continuing to do so. Hurray for them.
But if it is a failure from a completed and shipped device standpoint..then an official statement stating so needs to be issued.
along with a statement of funds of the investors that is still available for refund.

These issues need to be addressed whether the project is:
A- a success...and the project is still on course...
B- a partial (from an r+d perspective) success / partial (from a completed device ready to ship) failure
or
C: a total failure

Waiting to hear some official statements.

Remember that the plan is to start a crowdfunding campaign to widen the audience and get new customers when completion of the project is secured and only depends on the final number of backers/price per backer, not just count on those few that decided to invest years in advance on the more risky steps. I'm not saying it will be easy or work, but it's not the same as what your message would suggest.
