aliens could very well be asexual...
and hence dispense with all the wasted resource and energy of 2 sexes...
It is very inefficient.
Of course it brings up many other problems...
genetic integrity ....immune system issues...etc.

Of course ...if a crystalline species would avoid those issues...if such intelligence (which has been speculatively hypothesized in print) should ever exist ...

but my god....what a boring existence with only 1 sex ...in the species.
