I made an experiment: I got all the rpm's from a fedora build of openoffice.org for armel (they are in http://ooo.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/cws/upload/armeabiport01/ as reported elsewhere) and unpacked them on my desktop. They go all neatly in a subfolder under /opt, about 350 megs of stuff.
Then, I transferred the whole in my n800 tablet and tried to start the executable 'soffice'. My tablet didn't blast or commit suicide.

As far as I can understand, this is a compiler type issue, right? Do you think it's one thing one can work upon?

you can convert rpms to debs with alien. Try doing that and then installing them on the tablet. you need debian on your desktop though, and you also need to make sure to install the debs to your sd card or something cause obviously you can't fit OOo on the internal memory.

i don't understand the excuses about "the IT wasn't meant to do this or that" - why on earth would you cut out functionality that a large majority of your market (gadet hounds and business people) want?

how hard is it to compile a solid PIM for the IT?

yes I can watch movies and listen to MP3s, but i'd also like to have the IT as a versatile PDA when I'm on the go - so that i don't have to bring a PDA / cellphone AND IT - what sort of stupid logic is that?

is the IT marketed only towards young college kids who don't need PIM or office support?

all I can say is thank god for penguinbait, Nokia should be paying him heaps of money.

Honestly the open hostility to reasonable questions is in a big way, spooky and cause for
concern. Plus it is shocking that it is even tolerated by the site operators in that such
treatment can only drive away new users or even grown-up users who simply don't want
to deal with such childish behavior. Such responses seem to be on the rise since I have been
reading these boards.

This is so common in the technology world

Nerds and Linux geeks (who I love to death, but...) demand that you see it their way, while consumers (that's me, the guy who's interested in the N800, but does something else for a living, and spends most of his time writing about art) are left confused and basically unheard.

I think Microsoft learned this lesson a while ago, you can't just provide the hardware and say "ok team, everyone buy this and love it and support it."

if you can't take criticism, i'm very sorry for you - meanwhile as long as you ignore the fact that the iphone is slaying everything else, you're not going to get very far.

with that said, do i have an iphone? no, i bought an n800, and i'm excited about the opensource community. but if the open source community is going to be anything more than a cute little boys club where people sneer at outsiders, it will never be anything close to what it could be - that is, that the exchange of ideas and input from a wide variety of sources is something that is cherished and encouraged, and should not be closed off by profit gains.

I couldn't agree more!! Having KDE on my N810 has provided everything I need. I've been opening and editing OOo docs using KWord for months. I use KWord almost daily.

I haven't used Maemo as my desktop since December. Granted KOrganizer can take a bit of time to load initially (~30 seconds) it still provides an incredible PIM suite. KPdf keeps your place when you close a document. Konqueror has tabbed browsing and much better file management. Not to mention I still get to use the majority of Maemo apps in KDE. I could go on and on - but won't hijack this thread

The whole "RTFM" kinda attitude is annoying. This is where an ignore list can come handy as a forum resource.

And then there's people who really contribute, the fanoushes, frees, penguinbaits, and a few others that have made the IT's a pleasure to use through their contributions.

I don't give a rat's *** about yappers, or people who have their heads shoved deep inside where the sun doesn't shine and think that their view of the world is more significant than the others'.

Having the knowledge means NOTHING without being able to share it. But I guess that's a lesson in humility some people just can't handle.

Without much fanfare, it seems that the Debian armel guys got OpenOffice compiling. They slipped it into the repositories some time in the last week. I was browsing through packages.debian.org and I noticed that, suddenly, the openoffice.org package had "armel" listed in the architectures!

So, I jumped into my Debian chroot and did
and, hey presto...

caveat: this is definitely miata-pulling-giant-fifth-wheeler territory...
