I only got my N800 today. I used it for about 5 minutes before plugging it in, and carried on using it while charging it for an hour or so. I took the battery out (I was intending to update to OS 2008) and replaced it, and the tablet hasn't shown any sign of life since. I've tried practically everything, reading all the advice from the previous threads, and still can't get it on. This is really annoying me, as I've loved Nokia for ages, and expected this tablet to be nice and pretty straight forward to use.

I got my N800 for Canola, browsing the web, using MSN occasionally, and to make use of my free internet on my 3G phone. It's the only device that could do all of that, and it's upset me that it just doesn't work at all. Any help in at least getting this thing to show signs of life will be greatly appreciated.

Did you:
1. Remove the battery while it was still plugged in?
2. Reseat the battery after the initial failure?
3. Try it again with the power charger connected?

Can you:
1. Hold down the power button for a lengthy period of time?
2. Connect the tablet to a PC via USB and get any response from the PC?

Does the:
1. Blue LED light on the D-PAD light up at all at any point?

Above all else; be gentle with it. If you just got it today, perhaps you can return it or send it back to Nokia for service.

- Yes, to see if it would start without the battery, like the PSP can.
2. Reseat the battery after the initial failure?
- I've put it in and out many times to no prevail.
3. Try it again with the power charger connected?
- For hours, with the wattmeter at the wall showing nothing.

Can you:
1. Hold down the power button for a lengthy period of time?
- I've tried till my finger started hurting (about a minute).
2. Connect the tablet to a PC via USB and get any response from the PC?
- No, neither the N800 or my PC show any changes.

Does the:
1. Blue LED light on the D-PAD light up at all at any point?
- No, it seems absolutely dead

Also, thanks for actually taking time out to try to help. I clicked the big thanks button whatever that does...

That may have bricked it. I've never tried that on my n800, and can't tell you if that would short something or not, but that's my guess.

You might try just leaving the device alone overnight and seeing if it works in the morning.

I'd have thought it would be a little more robust than that?! If this is the case, I'm seriously disappointed in Nokia. How should I know that that would do such a thing?

I don't know many consumer devices that I would recommend removing the battery while still connected to a power outlet. I once bricked a Mac PowerBook doing that very same thing. For me, personally, I'd never try it again with any device.

I'm not saying that this actually HAS bricked your 800, just that it is possible. Like I said, try leaving it unplugged for an extended period of time and see if that helps.

Maybe someone else will drop by, see this thread, and be able to give you some more authoritative advice.

I seem to remember having a similar "Panic Mode" incident right after I got my n800, in which the device wouldn't boot, but can't remember the exact combination of steps that I took to get the device back up. I think it may have just been a matter of leaving it alone for a long time, or letting it charge for a long time. Either way, after that first "OMG!" that happened in the first 24 hours of ownership, I've never had a problem since.

Also this:

Seems to be a problem with the original firmware that shipped on the device. After you upgrade the firmware, you should be smooth.

Hey, my N800 regularly freaks out (I need to send it in...), but if you need to get it to turn on, here's what I've done:

Usually, I can leave the battery out for 30-40 minutes, but sometimes that doesn't fix it. If that doesn't work, try this -- get a plastic bag and put your N800 in it, then put that in the freezer (with the battery in) for about 5 minutes, then in the refrigerator for a minute or so.
When you take it out, while it's still cold, plug it into the charger... the screen should turn on within a minute or so and say "Charging".

If that doesn't work, I've sometimes had to repeat the above process with the battery out of the device when I put it in the freezer/refridgerator.

I'm not sure why this works, but it seems to fix it every time for me.
The last time that I had to do this was (ironically) right before upgrading to OS2008 which was supposed to fix this problem-- after you get yours working, I'd really recommend upgrading to the latest firmware, as it seems to have fixed the problem for me.

Hope this helps somehow

Thanks for all your help. Nothing can get it on, I'm going to return it, and charge the new one overnight before even thinking of turning it on.
