Did you:
1. Remove the battery while it was still plugged in?
- Yes, to see if it would start without the battery, like the PSP can.

I'd have thought it would be a little more robust than that?! If this is the case, I'm seriously disappointed in Nokia. How should I know that that would do such a thing?

I got my N800 for Canola, browsing the web, using MSN occasionally, and to make use of my free internet on my 3G phone. It's the only device that could do all of that, and it's upset me that it just doesn't work at all. Any help in at least getting this thing to show signs of life will be greatly appreciated.
