Hi all,

A while back I purchased a 3 Skypephone S2 for it's 3G internet and ability to act as a mobile modem with pre-installed drivers, as well as it's obvious skype/phone uses.

Now I would like to compliment it with something that has a larger screen and hardware keyboard for browsing the web- and the N810 seems to fit that perfectly.

However, I need to know whether I can connect up my phone to the N810 via USB, and have it recognize the modem and connect to the internet. I know it works with Windows and Mac OS, but have heard nothing about compatability with Linux.

Has anyone tried this, or has it been discussed elsewhere? (I did try searching, with no conclusive results.)

Many thanks!

I used the original Skypephone with a N800 & N810 with no problems, so the newer S2 should be fine over BT.

Does it work ok via USB? I'd rather not use BT, as it will run the battery down faster.

Thanks for the reply!

Does the S2 work as a modem over bluetooth? I almost bought one, but the sales drone in the shop assured me that it doesn't. I'm not convinced he knew what he was talking about, but I decided not to chance it at the time.

Yes, but apparently not the skypephone S2. I just had confirmation from 3 live support:

[me] Hi! Does the Skyphone S2 support bluetooth DUN (for use as a modem without USB)?
[3] Well you cannot connect to net with blutooth !
[3] you need a USB
[3] Are you looking to take out a new contract or an additional contract today?
[me] No, just to buy a new handset. So if I want bluetooth connectivity I should get the original skypephone then?
[3] yes
[3] because without usb you wont be able to connect to net.
The original is not that attractive for modem use as it doesn't support HSDPA though. The cheapest alternative that does seem to be the Nokia 6120 for 50% extra, but I'm not sure if it's worth it for just a few months' use (until the N900 comes along).

Interesting!

Could you post the output of "sdp-query <S2 MAC address>" on the N800 (or, even better, if you have access to a Linux box "sdptool browse <S2 MAC address>" on it)?

You can find the MAC address in Control Panel -> Bluetooth -> Devices -> (select the S2) -> Edit (the line labeled "Bluetooth address").

Thanks. Can you comment on what transfer speeds you get? Ie, is it actually better than a non-HSDPA device?
