With newer versions of Privoxy, you can set it up to allow editing of state/rules via the web browser. In my build, I've allowed this. So you can go to http://p.p/ to see the rules, toggle on or off, change the default protection, etc.

The default debian build has all that diabled by default for issues of multiple users mucking with the settings. Since the NIT pretty much expects only one user, I didn't see there being a problem with allowing for changing settings with the web interface.

This is definitely an issue, especially when running in a "new install" configuration (i.e. booting from built-in flash and virtual memory disabled). In my tests with privoxy 3.0.8 and this type of configuration on the 770, the browser + privoxy took over 1/2 the available memory. The situation was better with v.3.0.9-beta. I haven't tested v.3.0.10 on the 770 yet.

Since privoxy runs from /etc/init.d, I suppose you could install maemo-control-services to turn it on/off when you aren't browsing. It makes browsing less convenient, but gives you more memory for other programs. Since I boot from MMC on my 800 and use a large swap partition, I haven't seen any problems with running privoxy + browser and other apps at the same time.

Alright, I've used the autobuild system to put privoxy-3.0.10 into the "extras" repository for diablo and chinook. For those of you who know how to use privoxy, please give it a try.

I'm heading out of town for the weekend so I don't have time to fix the wiki page for privoxy.

I also don't know if I'll be able to build it for gregale and bora. My scratchbox setup doesn't seem to have "gcc" for those platforms and I can't figure out how to fix the problem. I'd love some help from others with scratchbox building experience.

I just wanted to add my name to the list of privoxy users. I will test the new package over the weekend...

After couple of days of use I've noticed no problems such as excess battery drainage, and it was nice to install it straight from the Extras.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the build!. For os2007/os2008 there has been an older version for some time (v. 3.0.6-2) see http://www.gronmayer.com/it/index.php. Warning for newbies: adding repositories found on that site (or any site) to the Application Manager can cause problems (dependency issues).

I can't seem to install it unfortunately. I get an error saying "Application packages missing: libpcre3 (>=4.5). After searching the forums a bit I found a related issue with Gnumeric, and the tip to try "apt-get -f install" as root, and then just going "Yes" to any questions. Unfortunately this doesn't solve anything, as nothing takes place besides it reporting that nothing was updated, installed or removed.

Anyone got any ideas. Linux-beginner me, so unable to solve this myself.

Do you have the extras-devel repository enabled? You'll find libpcre3 in there. Don't forget to disable it again after the install is done.

While this will solve installation problems, proper solution is to promote libpcre to extras repository
