Thanks. I did try this very model - doesn't work. I think I've tried about eight different types of single card reader without sucess.
grrr. Already ordered . Oh well, it's cheap & should work with my desktop at least. tx

As recommended in this thread I purhaced http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.6858 but have had no luck with it even for SD cards. The reader works with my Ubuntu desktop and I'm confident that I have the right bit for the N810 because it will read my USB memory stick. I also tried a multicard reader I have and my Canon S3 IS. They don't work with the N810 either. Any suggestions?

I have tried this card reader
http://www.kingston.com/flash/mobilelite_reader.asp

with the 8GB version of this card
http://www.kingston.com/flash/sdhc.asp

in an N810. The N810 recognises that something has been plugged in, but thats as far as it gets. Haven't ever had problems with USB flash drives.
I'm assuming this is happening because not enough power is going through the USB port on the N810. What options are there to get this to work? I'm guessing a powered USB hub would work, but I'm hoping for a more mobile option, since bringing along a USB hub and then plugging it in is just too much.

What I want to do is use the N810 to preview the photos from my camera (Canon S5 is) without using a computer. I was able to do this with a cheap, multicard reader, but that reader doesn't support SDHC.

http://www.meritline.com/mini-micro-...er-yellow.html - other colors available

These and similar work (including the small microsd readers of varying shapes and sizes from DealExtreme) in host mode in my n810.

One of the deals I mentioned was a Class 6 8G microSD with adapter to full size. I have one of these in my camera now.

Instead of trying to find a reader that would take any media, I've found adapters which I can put microSDs in (including a sd to cf at semsons.com). I do keep a universal reader or two around. I think the Belkin worked the best (there is an iPod camera adapter that is picky about current draw, and the Belkin worked with it so that might be a way to tell).

Single SD card reader found!!!

With a post from Lord Raiden (thanks again) I can confirn that there is a single card reader that will work without external power for the N810. It is aparently available only from K-Mart and that is where I purchased mine tonight (got the last one on display). It is the Targus TGR-SD20 and costs $8.99 + tax. Expensive for an SD reader but it works. I tried a 16gb SDHC Sandisk Extreme II. On plugging in, it opened File Manager as expected. No problem showing a video. I have not tried writing to the card but I'm pretty sure it will be fine. I used this reader with the DigiKey OTG microUSB to FEM USB adapter. So it was fully Plug and Play and makes a neat, portable 'package'.

OTG adapter ($8.87 + S/H):

I see no external LED on the reader so perhaps power draw is just a bit lower than all the other ones I have unsucsessfully tried.

BTW, it comes with an 18" male to femal USB cable which you might need in some cases as this reader is quite wide (about 36mm) and may not fit into some recessed USB ports.

Note that Targus have apparently got the same part number on another card reader so make sure you are buying the correct reader. See details on Lord Raidens second post in this thread:

If anyone has any questions on this reader feel free to ask.

I found the Targus reader at Walmart and it can be purchased online for $8.88. At last a card reader that works with the N810.

Targus TGR-SD20 SDHC reader

This cable has been mentioned before and indeed it worked well for me. Both the reader and an appropriate cable are required to read SD cards on the N810.

Cable - microUSB to Female USB A. Automaticaly sets the USB to OTG.

Here's another confirmation on a SDHC card reader that works.
http://canadacomputers.com/index.php...57&cid=990.434

I used it with an N810, the supplied USB cable, a F to F USB adapter, and switched the N810 to Host mode with USB Control. The card that I used was an 8 gb Kingston Class 4 SDHC card.

Have people had reasonable experience (returns or credit if needed) with brando.com.hk, considering it is HongKong, and that I would be risking $18 on thier CardReader in a car

I am actually looking for something that reads SIM and miniSD. Thanks

I've purchased from Brando over the years and was always satisfied -- never had to return anything. As to the reader it's not clear to me why most readers I tried wouldn't work with the N810 but did work with my Ubuntu desktop. A particular Targus model availble from Walmart online does work with my 8GB SDHC card.

I've purchased several items from Brando in support of my 770/810 and have had no problems nor needed to return anything. Orders received in less than a week to Bangkok from Hong Kong.
