Hey guys, I bought a N810 back in the day when they first came out. I loved the hardware so much, but from the perspective of an end user, I found most of the software to be low quality, and the user input didn't have a good focus making the N810 frustrating to use (a post about that here which I wrote a long time ago). I ultimately traded up for an iPod Touch, then an iPhone 3G.

But as I mentioned, I thought that the N810's hardware design was great since the day I got mine. I just borrowed a friend's N810 hoping that after about a year, maybe the software has risen to a level of quality that an end user could expect. My friend had also went the iPod Touch route so his N810 wasn't up to date. I spent a while last night installing 82MB worth of updates.

I want to make sure I have the unit up to date, and it would be great if anyone could let me know if they are some great new apps that I've missed over the last year.

The unit seems to be running OS2008 v4.2008.23-14, is that the most recent?

Back when I owned it, GPS on the N810 was embarassingly unusable, has it been updated to work at all?

Another thing I'm interested in. A while ago I recall people putting Android onto their N810's. Is anyone using Android as the primary OS of their internet tablet? Is it a viable option?

Thanks for any info. : )

You know, you could have been diplomatic (and more universally accurate) and said you "switched" to an iPod touch rather than "upgraded," but I'll respond nonetheless.

Yes, that's the current OS.

Look for AGPS or A-GPS in my first Newbie link. And there's a tutorial on current Maemo-Mapper.

Use the link to Google Android, too; I don't follow it.

Hope you enjoy your updated N810!

There are more applications in the Maemo extras and the system is a little more stable. There are a few other usable OS's on the system.
Canola is better,
Tear is a better webbrowser than MicroB.
Otherwise much is the same as it was when you left, nothing to blow your socks off.

Sorry, didn't mean any offense when I said upgraded, didn't even realize that I used that exact term : P

I don't think all the varieties of Debian were available a year ago. I think that the number of programs available in general has risen a lot.

Was Personal Menu and its related stuff available a year ago?

Liqbase is a very cool program still supposedly in beta but useful and fun.

Was that game emulating gravity where you draw rocks and things available then? I forget its name and I'm not running it now, but it's cool.

If you weren't booting from an mmc you should, to get maximum use from your tablet.

I think your original evaluation was wrong, so who knows what you will think now.

There is also a cool new application in Extras called "Quick Clip"...don't know if it's any good, though.
