Looks like those involved with its development did...

I know the Skype cooperation (just also announced in Kallasvuo's webcast) is evil for some purists, but to me that's exiting news. Let's face it, no one uses Google Talk for now, and having the webcam and not being able to use it would be silly - from a marketing, sales, and everyday usability point of view, that is. Same goes for the announced Rhapsody coop.

Nokia IS aiming to make this a consumer product this time, not just a developer produt. Perhaps its too early, I don't know. But that's where its going, it seems to me.

And WiMax next year (i.e. new tablet next year, right?).

I've tested the webcam with Google Talk-- no go for now. Google Talk needs the Festoon plugin for video functionality and the tablet software can't seem to deal with that, and vice versa.

I don't know. There's nothing definitive on maemo.org which says a version of OS 2007 will never be released for 2006, not even on the compatibility page:

http://www.maemo.org/downloads/maemo...atibility.html

Is it internal or external information which makes you believe otherwise?

... except, of course, the fact that marketing people might think they could sell more N800s if they break compatibility intentionally and thereby force consumers to get the new hardware sooner.

The more I think about it, the more it seems to me that this is the only reason. You see, there's this Nokia executive, and his tech people tell him:
"We can make the OS2007 available for the 770. It will take some extra time and effort for the original N800-codebase to separate things a bit, clean up the mess. And of course the team will then need xy weeks to do the backporting and testing. We estimate costs of EUR xy for the whole project and a delay of xy days for the N800."

Then this Nokia-guy asks:
"Sounds expensive. What if we don't do all that?"

The techs:
"That would be really bad, software development would focus on the new OS2007 pretty soon and leave our existing 770-users without 3rd party updates sooner or later. They'd probably have to buy a N800, then."

Now the Nokia executive understands:
"Now, you tell me plan A is to invest money and sell less N800s. Plan B is to have the new OS2007 available sooner, not invest any extra money and make more people buy the N800. - Well, this is a tough decision. Let me think about it for a moment..."

Hang on-- it's everyone else making the absolute claim. *I* said everyone was jumping too fast, and just made general comments about the issue. I apologize if my comments led anyone to think I knew for sure it was completely incompatible-- I just answered comments stating it was as if they knew what they were talking about.

So someone else tell me: what definitvely says there will never be a 2007 OS for the 770? Is that just an assumption? Because I don't have any further info on that particular subject.

Mhm... The site does't say much about the case, does it? Could it be they're selling a replacement for the metal cover separately now? I'd be interested in the material and design of the thing. The picture doesn't show much... it looks more like a rectangular piece of leather to fit the screen than a case.

If anyone gets one of these, I'd be interested in pictures.

It's out. No OS2007 to 770.

So as of now
-we keep on selling and supporting 770s
-we expect many Maemo applications to be made available for both products
-hacking and development will be supported on both platforms
-Nokia will not integrate and make OS2007 available for 770
They expect applications to be made available for both - and just how they think they can force 3rd party developers to do that? Or are they going to do it at Nokia? I think now is the time warn anyone thinking of buying N800 - prepare to buy new one next year!
