Too bad, a master-list of all available repositories would be really useful for a new user like me.

There was an effort made by the community some time ago to move all the applications and other wonders that were scattered hither and yon across many repositories into just one. That one, central repository is Extras.

Once you enable Extras on your tablet, it should be a rare occasion indeed that you find yourself needing any other repository. That said...

Beyond Extras, there is Extras-devel, which developers use to release beta quality software for testing prior to final release. Software from that repository cannot and should not be trusted to work, so Extras-devel should only be enabled temporarily to install a specific, desired item, if at all.

qole also has his own repository, but that's mainly because he needs to distribute the monstrously huge filesystem images that make his Easy Debian stuff work. It's an acceptable stopgap until some suitable location on maemo.org can be created.

Tear, an alternate web browser for the tablets, also exists in qole's repository, but again, it's an interim solution. There were some technical barriers to placing Tear in Extras, but most to all of those barriers have finally been removed. Therefore, Tear will likely move to Extras, or at least Extras-devel, in time.

Another questions:
- To put the device in sleep mode, is it automatic? For the moment, I only lock the screen.
- For games, what are your advices? Which emulator (PS, Game Boy)?

Thanks again !
You don't need a sleep mode on a NIT. just put it down & walk away. I never even turn mine off.

There are a bunch of cool games in the Extras repository, try them all! (you can always uninstall).

I use iNes. Just google ZOPHAR and it should bring you to a site where you can download all those good old Nintendo games.

Yes, the N810 comes with 256mb for the system, and 2gb for extra storage.

b) So what you use additional memory cards for is simply for non-application data (like music, documents, etc). Makes more sense to me now.
With traditional usage, yes, however, as stated, you CAN move the OS to another card (I'd Recommend the 2gb), now easier than ever with the post above ^^.

Final example/questions:
1) Assume I still have the OS happily running of the 256 (I assume 256MB Flash memory). I buy a 16GB memory card. Can I now access data stored on both the internal 2GB as well as the new 16GB card - making my combined memory 18GB - or am I restricted to just access one of the two?
You can ACCESS data from both cards, they show up in the file manager, etc, as two separate drives.

2) Is there a significant/noticeable slowness in access and playing a movie for instance if it is stored on the internal 2GB memory or on a card you plugged in?

Thanks, you guys truly are the best...!
Nope. I have a class 4 microSDHC card and data access is just as fast as the 2gb internal and the 256mb (as far as I can tell.)

I have VLC on my applications list. I think it works in Maemo (I never tried installing it -- it takes up about 15.8 MB). I (unfortunately) don't know the repository, but the maintainer is listed as:tapio.hiltunen@vtt.fi. Maybe someone knows the repository it's in?

If you want some repositories, look here: http://www.gronmayer.com/it/
(Note: If you "install" all of them -- like I did -- expect the tablet to load the installable application list pretty slowly.)

Also (kind of related to the original post), I was once going to sell my tablet to get something else (that was before I discovered FBReader!), and I made a list of what I had done with it:
- Using the dates application to keep track of events
- using the (built-in) notes/sketch applications to jot down ideas
- Installing the pre-developed android version
- Running easy debian (and more importantly, open office -- lets you open microsoft word, powerpoint, etc. files) forum
- Using the n810 as a "screen extension" forum
- Controlling my computer mouse (and PowerPoint presentations) through bluetooth with BlueMaemo forum download video
- Using both the VNC Viewer and PyRDesktop (install Rdesktop first to use PyRdesktop) clients to get remote access to my computer VNC vid VNC Viewer RDesktop PyRdesktop
- Running Mplayer (Mplayer is required for video playback in many media players)/MediaBox/Canola media players (with a plethora of extensions) Mediabox forum Mediabox & Plugins Download Canola & Plugins Download
- Using Streamtuner to stream internet radio download
- Using the web browser and Orb to stream video & music to the tablet homepage
- Using Evice (PDF reader) to do Calc homework download
- Streaming music from my Vista Media center using MCEGuru homepage download youtube vid
- Uploading content to Picasa/Youtube using SharePy homepage download
- Watching/downloading youtube videos into canola/mediabox/mYtube/digia@scene mYtube vid mYtube forum mYtube download digia@scene forum digia @scene download
- Testing both Skype/Gizmo for audio/video chat (video only works in gizmo)
- Using phonelink to send SMS with my phone
- Using Pidigin with many add-ons to Instant Message download
- using Dial Central to call with Grandcentral/Google Voice
- Using the mgCal home widget to keep track of my google calendar events
- Using the RSS feed reader applet (comes preinstalled) to keep track of technology RSS feeds
- Emulating the iPhone/iPod touch with the Maemo browser forum
- Playing games using the gameboy advance emulator forum games download
- Using FBReader to read books in .html files download
- Testing the web browsers Midori/Tear/Digia@web and Iceweasel/Epiphany (Easy Debain only) Midori Tear
- Using AlmostTI as a graphing calculator on the tablets forum download
- Rotating the screen for better web browsing (in some cases) here

I'll find and add more links later. Note that ALL of the stuff mentioned above was done by following forum posts on this website. I had (and still have) a very limited knowledge about linux, so I think the forum posts should be pretty easy to follow. Just search for whatever you're interested in doing on this site or google if that fails; if you can't find/do something, I'm pretty sure either me or someone else can help you.

For Skype, I heard about Fring. But can't install it using the instruction on this page: http://www.fring.com/download/linux/
The software manager says something like "Download Impossible" .
Have you the same problem?

A lot of linux applications that you find on various websites do not easily install on Maemo. You should generally look for apps specifically marked to be used in Maemo.

///EDIT:

Until, of course, you start delving into the world of alternate OS's and whatnot

Hmmm. It said installation was impossible? If you post the exact message, I'm sure someone who reads this will know what to do.
