The new version of Abiword for Maemo is a lot more stable than previous versions, but Abiword is not perfectly compatible with Microsoft Word. Many of my more complex Microsoft documents are mangled.

But Abiword loads a lot more quickly than OpenOffice, so it is much better for just opening documents that people send you as e-mail attachments or editing simple Word documents.

Since my last update of abiword it just starts to load and then crashes.

Try to erase your /home/user/.AbiSuite directory. Worked for me

Right now, it's Abiword in Easy Debian.
A maemo port of Abiword is being done, but not very stable.

i find the maemo abiword to be stable--i've never had it crash. granted, i'm not using it for high-powered fancy stuff, but it's been able to open any .doc that i've thrown at it, and basic editing and what not. OO takes forever to load on my (old) 1.4 Mhz/256Mb desktop--i'd imagine it would take until next year to load on the NIT.

No, not next year, but it can seem pretty slow when you're in a hurry. Over two minutes, if you have a slow SD card. If conditions are just right, it can start in about a minute.

Add Extras-devel to your repository list in Application Manager (Click on this install file while on your tablet).

Once you are finished installing Abiword, disable Extras-devel. Otherwise you may download software that isn't ready for general use.

My Abiword now works! But does anyone know what the handler command is in Dbus Switcher? I tried “Abiword %params%” and “Abiword %params2%”.

Qole, is this true on both Maemo and Easy Debian versions of Abiword? What I have seen is that many .doc documents that open fine in Easy Debian Abiword are mangled under the latest beta of Maemo Abiword.

Depends if your 'mangling' is caused by size or formatting incompatiblities. Easy Debian makes the temp dir much larger to allow big docs to open. Otherwise, the two versions should be the same in terms of Word compatibility...
