I'm in the mist of getting ready to use my tablet for my largest project w/client yet here at work, and one of the questions/comments that I wonder about is the Modest email client. Specifically, have there been plugins developed for it in the past, and is that idea of plugins for it something that would be worth bringing up again?

---
One of the plugins that I think would be really solid for the IT is that of an email plugin that gives an additional context item to attachments to send them to a web-based document-to-PDF conversion service.

So, for example, you get a docx document in Modest, but don't have an application to read it. So you tap-hold on it and get the context menu to send it to the PDF service, which then takes you directly to a website which does that conversion, with all you needing to do is to confirm the action once on that page.

---
My thinking is that with plugins like these, simple applications can become more powerful - as as we've seen with Firefox on the desktop, people can become very attached to a platform or application because of such extensions, making it possible for developers to gain better mind and marketshare for their talents.

Given that Modest is pretty much unusable for most people, I suggest considering writing plugins for Claws instead. Claws does support plugins and there is plenty examples available.

I'm curious to why you say the above. I'm just now starting out using email on my N810 and am so far using Modest. What features of Claw makes it better than Modest and why is Modest 'unusuable for most people'?

I'm using Modest with a 5000 e-mail IMAP account... I don't understand how it's unusable for most when all the important features are there and work.

I used to use claws mail, in fact for a while I hosted and built the rpms for fedora (until it was merged and kept up to date by the fedora team)

But for me now it isn't usable at all now, and only kmail is usable.
Email clients are very very subjective view and it depends what you want, also people moan very loudly - but keep quiet when they like something (except for Apple of course, where you aren't allowed to not like it!)

Modest for me is fine, it's not the greatest and it is missing functionality - which is making me think of developing for it, but it is fairly nice, and getting better all the time.

What's kmail?

kmail is the email client for kde, specifically it supports ldap address books in read and write mode and html mail (which I hate and is wrong, but that is the world of corporates - horrible and wrong)

On kde4.3 I have finally configured it well, took me awhile to get all the settings correct though.

But when the phone n900/rover/whatever comes, I am hoping to do most of my work from that rather than from my desktop.

So it's ldap read/write support for address books that I need in Modest, unless someone knows a method of doing it at the moment?

I also use Modest everyday with a not so big Imap gmail account. I don't do anything fancy or special just read, delete, reply, forward a couple of emails everyday. I prefer Modest over Claws WAY to many features and menus.

the issue i have with claws is that it tries to put all mail info on a single line. While fine on the desktop (and barely there), on the tablet it becomes much to cramped.

modest on the other hand is missing the ability to delete a mail from a pop server after its header have been deleted locally. Osso-mail had that ability, and i would call its lack a serious regression...

Another thing I noticed about Modest today is it for some reason if it's inactive for a while it will go into sleep mode with a Zzz icon which doesn't save a draft of your message for you automatically...
