Ran "Road to Ruin" audio clip on Media player (in a loop) to see how long a full charge battery would last. Results were 5 hours. I had the screen turn off and low volume with headset that came with N800. Bluetooth and wlan were off.

Ouch... that's bad. I could get around 16 hours of mp3 playback out of the 770 that way.

Yes that is not good. I was wondering has anyone ran a test with better results?

You must admit though, tht is not really a functional real world test.

I mean, who in their right mind would actually be listening to an audio track non-stop for 5-16 hrs?

AnAnd.- was internet connection inadvertently on during this time?
y point is that for all actual intensive purposes, I have noticed that my N800 lasts just as long as my 770 while doind just about the same things for the same amount of time....notwithstanding the processor speed improvements.

I can easily imagine myself listening to music/podcasts/audio books and whatnot on a long plane ride for that long. In fact, I plan on taking my n800 on the plane ride to Puerto Vallarta from Seattle this Monday. A 3x diminution in battery life compared to a previous model is a big deal. A lot of people have discussed how with up to 8 GB of storage (and more on the way with presumed SDHC support) and the side mounted stereo out plug, the n800 has excellent possibilities to replace your DAP/iPod entirely in your gadget bag. Now with these revelations about battery life, the future of the n800 as a multimedia device isn't looking quite as bright...

Oh, btw, my iRiver H320 is still the best mp3 player I have used to date. Amongst other things, with the Rockbox firmware and a Newertech 2200mah battery, I get greater than 30 hours of playback time in RW playback scenarios. Thats with a hard drive based player, btw. The n800 doesn't have to deal with power sucking hard drives, so what is its excuse?

What would you consider a real world test?

No one that I know of would listen to a track for 5-16 hrs.... this was a TEST.

Like I said in the first post wlan was off bluetooth was off.

Could you please run this test and post your results so we have some data for comparison, thank you.

From zdnet:
n our standard handheld test, we played music continuously from an SD card with the screen forced to stay on, and got 5 hours 16 minutes of uptime. For a mobile device this is less than adequate, and if you keep the device internet-connected via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, you're unlikely to get a day's-worth of charge from the BP-5L lithium-polymer battery. For the record, Nokia claims up to 3.5 hours of 'browsing time' and up to 12 days on standby.

Sound weard that your n800 does 5 hours without screen, and here 5 hours with screen...

1) It's not a dedicated MP3 player,
2) it doesn't have a 2200 mAh battery

That's why I also play mp3s on my H340, not on my 770...
