@fms: well it was in continuation of the 'discussion' in the past few pages about the reasons for iphone's market success and concerns about RX-51's ability to gain the necessary marketshare to sustain itself.

I saw many posts here that disregarded the need for RX-51 to cater to the mass as being ignorant and selfish and that passage for the article rang true to me.

I'm not evangelizing any platforms here, I was merely pointing out what is required by the 'real world' out there for a product to be successful and how so many people here are pretty delusional in their idealistic shells

ps: Yes, your 'complaints' are the classic ones. But does that make the iphone to be the least popular mobile platform in the market?

You erroneously think that the iPhone and RX-51 occupy the same market niche. They do not. The way things look, RX-51 is the first test device that will replace current crop of high-end Symbian phones and compete with high-end HTCs in terms of productivity. To confirm that, you only need to compare RX-51 with the current HTC offerings. You get extensibility, the full range of hardware features, and interoperability with the outer world. You generally get decent looks, but not perfect ones, as your emphasis is on features, not on shininess.

iPhone, on the other hand, is not a productivity mobile device. It is a fashion item. Nokia also makes some fashion items, under the "Vertu" brand. Some people absolutely love shiny fashion objects, but they are not the same people as the ones buying shovels.

No. Should they?

You have to be kidding -- you think the earlier NITs would have had mainstream success if only they had better eye candy?

Unfortunately, IMHO you've just demonstrated yet another common pitfalls made by 'technicians':

- Market niches are defined by product specs or their looks.
- Product desireability are defined by their specs.

No. Should they?
It was not directly relevant to the topic I was discussing.

"So why do so many criticize the iPhone, if it's so great? I think it's because they make the classic marketing mistake of thinking "It's all about ME." It isn't. The iPhone haters see the limitations (hard keys, cut/paste, tethering...) of the phone, and they focus on how the phone doesn't have any tech breakthrough or meet THEIR specific needs. But the mass market is what really matters in business."
Why do iphone/itouch fan boys always want everyone else to use apple stuff? They keep on *****ing about its features and ease of use.I just have one last thing to say
" I have used an iphone and it is just not what i want. Now stop harassing us!"

I guess I can't speak for ysss, and I'm no Apple fanboy, don't own a touch or iPhone, but discussing the Nokia N900 being a big mainstream hit most reasonably asks for comparison to the iPhone. Those of you who think they are addressing two significantly different markets, or people like it solely because its cute, aren't living in the real world. I don't see ysss telling you to get an iPhone. I'm not. But acting as if it is less than extremely relevant is like wanting to talk about a big comeback for the American car industry and refusing to make comparisons to the Japanese.

I think a large portion of apple's success is based on great advertising. If anything we have to learn from apple it is the advertising. But nokia is a conservative company. It will never issue statements like "World's most advanced phone." Somehow that relates to me. Nokia wants people to use all the features and with its comparatively open nature wants users to try every new feature in a phone.

I would be much happier if osso-xterm allowed me to use either Lucida Bright or the Nokia fonts!...

Looking at the specs of the RX-51 I am getting my self a N810 as an N800 upgrade. Not a N900 I don't want to pay loads more for a smaller screen, smaller battery, and a device locked t-mobile on a contract.

This is not an internet tablet its a maemo phone!
All it looks like at the moment is a little larger N97 with a different keyboard and maemo as the OS.

It's a strange bipolar sort of thing. Elitist device users want to flaunt the superiority of their preferred toy, but if each of them convinced too many others to buy one as well then it would lose that exclusive status.
