I don't really know what it's called (the bar at the bottom that shows whether the input is uppercase, numbers, etc.), but it would be great if someone could make a program to replace nokia's version that takes up quite a bit of the screen when using the keyboard on the n810.

I wonder if there is some way to monitor the key presses and use that information to show what state (numbers, letters, uppercase) the keyboard input is going to be in? The replacement program could use the same indications as nokia provided (Fn, Abc, et.), but have it as an "overlay" to whatever is currently on the screen, with no bar.

I have no idea how to do this (or even if it's been done), and this may be impossible (somehow locked away in a closed source blob), but I figured I'd ask anyway.

I agree. I've turned off that toolbar because I didn't like the space it took up and the UI untidiness as it resized the screen. It would be good to see the indicators as a status bar applet. Even better would be if they could be lights on the slide-out keyboard itself (e.g. on the buttons) so as to not take up any screen space at all, but I don't see that happening.

You can turn it off, but then you also lose any of the word-completion suggestions.

Having the suggestions isn't as important to me as seeing the indicator. I understand it would probably be the opposite for n800 users, since they don't have a separate keyboard.

How? I had it gone once, then reflashed, and now I can't find out how to disable it. Probably missing something really obvious...

You can press Shift-Spacebar at any time to minimize it.

It's kinda hidden:

Control Panel, Text input settings, Languages, Settings, Word completion: untick

When you shift+spacebar it when you tap a text entry it brings up the stylus keyboard. How can we completely prevent that bar from ever appearing for anything?

I also had to disable "Next word prediction".

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
