Very nice work guys. The ability to remove all scrollbars is a nice touch. I only wish the web browser allowed you to do the same.

That feature has been available in VNC viewer for at least a year :-)

A few users have reported problems connecting to certain servers, so Detlef and I will test out with some of the latest servers and see if we can reproduce. If necessary, we might provide a special version of VNC viewer that prints out some additional debug information to the command-line. VNC viewer already prints out some information to the command-line--to see it, start xterm and run vncviewer.sh from the command prompt. And command-line output will appear in xterm.

That's funny, I can't believe I never noticed it before.

Curious, I started the viewer from the xterm session as suggested and it worked. Now it seems to work every time. Looks good. I know it has been discussed, but the ability to scale would be a bonus.

Thank you

Hi Aaron,

thanks for the advice. Before I post the next bit, note i'm a linux noob so be gentle if I am doing something stupid ;-) I download osso-xterm, ran it then just typed vncviewer.sh at the prompt, was this what I was meant to do? I got the following...

vncviewer[1457]: GLIB ERROR ** default - file maemo-vnc-viewer.c: line 46 (create_data): assertion failed: (result->osso)
aborting...
Aborted

Any ideas?

Please help - I am at a complete loss here in the Linux world. I need to be able to take control of a remote Win XP Pro machine. I use Logmein.com but realize it does not work with the N800 Opera browser.

I have read VNC may be the solution. I have another week to get this working or I will have to return my N800 to CompUSA and abandon the coolest handheld device I have ever used.

I installed the newest version of the VNC viewer to the N800. Based on articles found online - I tried to configure WinXP for remote use without a VNC Server. I opened ports 5500, 5800 and 5900 on the router and TrendMicro FireWall. Every attempt to connect immeadiately resulted in "could not connect to server"...

Can someone PLEASE give detailed instructions on if VNC Server is required and if so which server is best to install on XP Pro and how to setup so it can be used in an environment with LinkSys Router and TrendMicro Firewall. Also is there a need to use SSH? If so - please provide insight into what to use and how to install/setup.

Sorry that I am SO ignorant in this world. I am trying to stick with it instead of returning N800 and going back to Win device that I can configure myself.

Thanks,
Jeff

jdk410, I am not far ahead of you in experience but I do know that you will need to install a VNC server on the machine you want to control from your N800. There are many VNC Servers out there. We use UltraVNC ( http://www.uvnc.com/ ), the people that made that decision are very knowledgeable, so I imagine it is a good choice.

Jeff,

You will need to run a VNC server on your Windows system. Perhaps the best way for you to start is to setup VNC server on one Windows system and setup VNC viewer on another (www.realvnc.com for install packages). VNC is not specific to Linux. You can use VNC, both the viewer and the server, on a variety of operating systems and platforms. By initially trying this out with Windows-to-Windows, you can get a better idea of how it works.

There are various VNC servers that are supported on Windows. Here are some options:
www.realvnc.com
www.tightvnc.com
www.ultravnc.com (as suggested above)

Regarding ssh, that is only necessary if a port is not opened in your firewall, and you are running an ssh server on the network. There is a way to do something called "port forwarding" by going through ssh, and you can find information on how to do this on the Internet (just search for vnc and ssh). However, the easiest thing is to open ports. Probably, you will only need to open port 5900, although this will introduce a potential security hole. However, if you only need to do this on your local network, then it shouldn't be a problem (and technically, you shouldn't have to open a hole in the firewall as well, depending on how the server system is configured).

Regards,
AaronL
