Just to throw on some wood on the fire. A device harnessing the Earth's magnetic field is not a perpetual motion. The fact the fuel is not tangible does not mean it's not required or unlimited. If you tap into the magnetic field, you're in fact influencing (=extracting energy from) the Earth's spinning metal core. Vast ? Yes. Unlimited ? No. Energy HAS to come from somewhere.

Actually it should be possible to get energy from the earth's magnetic field. It probably wouldn't be a great quantity, but whatever device you built to harness it would likely appear to be a perpetual motion machine. I think Tesla was working on it at one point.
