I did the math: it could actually power THREE small countries: Absurdistan, Banalia, and The Adnauseum Republic.

Actually it should be possible to get energy from the earth's magnetic field. It probably wouldn't be a great quantity, but whatever device you built to harness it would likely appear to be a perpetual motion machine. I think Tesla was working on it at one point.

Anyone interested in Nicola Tesla's work should Google HAARP.

Just to throw on some wood on the fire. A device harnessing the Earth's magnetic field is not a perpetual motion. The fact the fuel is not tangible does not mean it's not required or unlimited. If you tap into the magnetic field, you're in fact influencing (=extracting energy from) the Earth's spinning metal core. Vast ? Yes. Unlimited ? No. Energy HAS to come from somewhere.

Again, though, it approximates perpetual motion close enough for our purposes. By the time we've slowed the Earth down, we'll be long gone...

Maybe with free they mean free as in speech, being less dependent. What is meant is practically unlimited, practically innumerable. If cost of labour to construct, R&D, cost of maintencance all go down there will at some point be 'practically free energy'. It isn't completely gratis (breathing costs your body energy, which you need to replenish, after all).

Whats so hard with breaking the laws of physics. You know you've broken the law before.

Well, it would stop when the magnetic field goes to zero during the times that the magnetic poles are changing their polarities. Of course, we might not live through such a time, without the ionosphere to protect us, so it may be for all intents and purposes perpetual to us!

For anyone who is really interested in the history of the subject of Perpetual Motion, I recommend the book:

Perpetual Motion: The History of an Obsession, by Arthur W. J. G. Ord-Hume

I am surprised nobody brought up yet Tesla's wireless "free energy" project, the one that was suppressed by evil companies... I love the guy, but not the fan club.

Rare-earth magnets are just strong magnets. They are just like any other magnet, except they can be built smaller to create the same field. The physical principle of energy conservation still apply.

And anything related to quantum physics will be restricted to small atomic scales and short periods of time, where indeed some weird energy fluctuations can happen. Of course, if someone manages to "pierce the space-time continuum" we can say anything.

The most "fringe" thing I do hold some hopes for is cold fusion. Not necessarily the exact same process advertised in the past, or being researched right now, maybe something new. And there is "hot" fusion of course, ITER is coming!

(EDIT: I wrote this before reading page 4 You can't take energy from a magnetic field, all you can do is move charges through the field to create E.M.F. . But the energy comes from the thing pushing the charges.)
