In UK and Europe the N900 is almost free with Vodafone (it is 29). No much need of marketing there...
http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/...62/p26078.aspx
The problem is in USA where there is no operator for N900, and actually only T-Mobile can carry it, but it didn't seem to want it.
With no operator in USA, no way of it having mass appeal. $600 is still not a cheap price. Now, iPhone 3G is only $99 on AT&T, that's a difference...
But for the unlocked segment N900 rocks!

Also, did anyone try that microsoft promoted bing cashback thing? Will that work for pre-orders too?
So, how is it in the UK like getting one on contract for 30 and then canceling the contract by paying some damages? Is that viable? In the US, it is.
If that is possible and the total (everything including the taxes) comes out to be cheaper than the amazon offered price, I would consider trying that route

I want to pre-order one too, but I am still on fence about it: can it cook, wash dishes?

If you have seen the Palm CEO on engadget show, he said it is important to focus (and have a direction).
Nokia has shown less focus and too much let's try and see... which is not good. For instance a Maemo phone could be done in 6 months after N810 was out, with kind of the same interface, but having telephony. They instead bought Symbian and forgot about Maemo until Symbian did NOT prove. Maybe too late in the competition with iPhone, Nokia looked again at Maemo. But even now the device is like a bastard for Nokia, N900 looks like an orphan, no carriers for it, no fight to get operators, no fight to show it to the world, no internet ads, no marketing, no TV commercials... Again, Nokia does not focus to promote this device like Apple did with iPhone, to create stories about it, to create a good light about it, to keep the device on the news... And yes, Apple is very, very focused, naming all its devices the same, creating a major brand "iPhone"...
Why Nokia does not focus?

The price in USA is $588, in Europe is 600 €. This is fair, because when the "wind of change" blows from US to Europe, transporting the phone over the ocean in opposite sense makes it loose some $$.
