You make me feel I'm lucky that I made my trip safely, since during my eurotrip in summer, all I had was 5800XM and Garmin Mobile XT with euro maps. Didn't know that magnetometer is that important for gps usage.

I don't consider it a dealbreacker for navigation.
Note that GPS doesn't work in indoors and in fact shouldn't, since it will be most probably getting non accurate positioning. Why a compass is then useful without GPS is over me.

The bottom line is that the n900 does not have a magnetometer and a GPS can not fully replace its functionality. Is that a deal breaker? Probably not for some people. But it's still a fact.
