Not sure whether to laugh or cry but in any case this thread has been amusing.

You do know that the laws of physics are for everyone, right?

I think it's important that people are aware of the actual capabilities of hyped features so they can judge for themselves whether the hype is really worthwhile. I've already explained the limitations of OLED, so I'll just say that i'm happy to have a transflective(?) LCD on the N900 and leave it at that.

Classic example of arbitrary Nokia decision making. Couldn't just fallback to the no brainer of tagging with lat/lon if network isn't accessible, could you Nokia?

So, the answer is N900 has LCD display, thanks your answer!

Am so happy if you are happy with the LCD technology!

LCD for sunlight, OLED for battery life.

The N900 has a transflective LCD display. This means that there is a semi-reflective layer behind the liquid crystal layer.

Indoors, the backlight shines through the semi-reflective layer then through the liquid crystal layer. A voltage is applied to each pixel in the display, which turns the crystals so that they block of transmit the light. In this way, the image is formed.

Outdoors, sunlight can be brighter than the backlight of the screen. The sunlight passes through the liquid crystal layer, and some of the sunlight is reflected by the semi-reflective layer, and that sunlight then passes through the liquid crystal layer again to reach your eyes. In this way, you can still read the screen in bright sunshine (although the colours are messed up and it doesn't look very pretty).

A true LED display (OLED or otherwise) has a tiny light emitting diode at each pixel. By turning these on and off, the amount of light is changed and the image is formed. OLED displays look great, with really vibrant colours. They are also quite economical with power, because dark pixels use no electricity (unlike an LCD which has backlighting behind the whole screen at all times). But they are not transparent, and cannot have a transflective layer placed behind the LEDs to make them sunshine-readable. Having said that, OLED displays are quite bright and should do better outdoors than a non-transflective LCD.

The 770 and N800 have regular (non-transflective) LCDs. The N810 and N900 have transflective LCDs.

Regards,
Roger

Because you like not being able to use the thing outdoors?

No, wait, never mind.

You're in Manchester => Bright sunlight not a problem.

LCD technology is 49 years old. Ewan, its for you, mchu6am4 an me prefer the now-days technology, you dont. We all use N900 because its OS.

I suggest you to slow down and read carefully eiffel's post a bit upper.

The internal combustion engine is over a hundred years old--don't drive... or pay more for a hybrid/electric with worse performance.

Not that I don't agree about the AMOLED, but sometimes the newer technologies just have different advantages/disadvantages--not necessarily across-the-board better (similar to the resistive/capacitive screen argument).
