Do exactly what I am going to do: I am currently on T-Mobile's Solo 20 SIM-only plan, so once I get N900 with new T-M contract in my hands, I'll port my current number to Vodafone's pay-as-you-go service and once that's done, then port it back to T-M contract that came with N900. I reckon the whole operation shouldn't take longer than few days, maybe a week.

Can't you just swap the number directly between the two T-Mo services?

According to T-Mobile's customer services and MPD - no, I can't. Silly, no? :(

However, I'll give another try once I get that new contract.

I've ordered the T-mobile contract with MPD and am patiently (well, actually not so patiently) waiting for the device to come through. This is the first time I've ordered a contract online in the UK so not sure exactly how it works. I understand they will charge me the £3.99 for delivery when the device is ready to ship, but what exactly happens about the monthly £35 charge to T-mobile? When exactly is that debited from my account? Immediately or later?

Any clarification would be helpful - I've been living abroad using PAYG for a long time so I'm not exactly familiar with the charging system for contracts in the UK.

This is "first time" for me as well, but as far as MPD guy told me over online chat a while ago - SIM card will be included in package and ready to use, while T-Mobile will send welcome letter and initial bill separately.

That would only work if I could get the N900 on my current t-mobile plan. I'm currently on flex-40 and flex contracts aren't being given out by Nokia Flagship. I don't know if MPD will have Flex contracts as I haven't asked.

Hey, thanks for the clarification. Just wondering whether I need to make sure I have enough money in my account to cover the first monthly payment

I reckon that you can always upgrade your plan to higher, once you get a contract. So place an order for Combi25/30, then upgrade to Flex40. However, if I were you, I'd call 150 first and specifically ask whether that's possible (they might offer Flext plans to new customers only, or sth).

I think you have to have a contract for 6months before you can change it though. I have many avenues to investigate at the moment to find a way around this.

But with Vodafone, the Nokia store does both upgrades and new contracts.

Ordered mine through MPD, went into Nokia retail store to order but they couldn't match the tariff that was being done through Nokia Retail on the web for some reason. Basically the shop couldn't give me the same handset for free on that tariff. Whereas the net could.
