It depends on where you are, if you're in a area that does not have 3g, than you won't get it, vice versa.

Also, I'm currently using my good old $5.99 T-Zone plan and I'm getting 3.5g on my N900.

Now, here's a quick first impress of my phone(more like a impression I came up with after playing with it for over 8 hours):

I've used the device for a good 7-8 hours before the battery completely dies out on me. A good 4 hours of Wifi, where I am browsing the net, installing apps, and downloading stuff. Then the rest is on my HSPA+ constantly streaming music, while browsing the net. I did get a good half an hour of talk time in it. Seeing how I use my device, looks like I might actually need to get an extra battery just incase.

I do have to say that T-Mobile's HSPA+ network, or 3.5g is quite fast. The speed is actually on par with my wifi connection(my ISP is at 15mbps), it's just slightly, I mean literally slightly, slower than my wifi.

One thing I have to say, not having portrait mode was a little bit confusing to me. There was a few moment that I held my N900 at portrait and start shaking it, thinking, why isn't it going to portrait? Then I realize, oh yea, there's no portrait mode. Don't get me wrong, not having portrait is not really a con. It just needs some time to get use to.

After carefully examining the pictures I took with my N900 on my computer, I officially proclaim that the image capturing quality is mediocre. I can even say it's worst than my Samsung i900. I do hope they can improve the quality on their next firmware release.

There is a thread on Howard Forums now with the first impressions of a new user >> http://howardforums.com/showthread.p...3&page=1&pp=15

He apparently is a former iPhone user and along with the usual canard about screen technology, he has some pretty negative impressions. I suspect many are wrong though so your thoughts may help me in constructing a decent response.

His reaction is as I feared and posted some months ago... Because of the N900's price and the perception that this is Nokia's top of the line phone, new user expectations will be high.

The biggest hurdles will be what the iPhone and the press for the most part have conditioned some to believe; that in order for a smartphone to work it needs an app store and, if you want a web based service you need a specific app for it.

I for one want to be the "smart" part of this equation and not the dang phone.

Many of the services I need are unique and I want a device that will allow me to connect to them without waiting for an app to be "Developed". The web works for me that way on my desktop and it should work that way with my future phone.

With a little effort, I was able to set this up with my N810 so I have no doubt the same can also be done with the N900.

Again, any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Wow that's a pretty negative review. My expectations are probably as high as this guy's too.

I read his review and honestly, he doesn't know what he bought. I mean, half of the things he said are BS and the second half can be either fixed or doesn't really matter. I just think he didn't understand what the N900 is about. It's better then an iPhone, fact.

While sr1329 can be negative, his impressions are usually directly opposite of the absolute-positive opinions that many (at HoFo) have towards Nokia's products.

Dude knows his stuff and frankly usually tells it like it is.

While I don't have the N900 in hand yet and cannot comment on his N900 specific issues, I think the review was quite fair in its general criticisms of Nokia. I love Nokia phones but having used all their Ovi services, most of the desktop software and a number of Nokia phones, their software side product management, development methodology and especially QA is quite horrible. I'm sure the N900 will be a solid phone by post release firmware version 3 or so, but I am tempering my expectations for the N900 at release based on my previous Nokia experiences.

Been reading her a lot but have to post now.

Have just read the hole tread from "sr1329" and as the tread goes on he gets more positive to the device

The last post from him

"I'm beginning to see there's a lot to learn about this phone. Just found the Maemo gestures website. There's some cool stuff in there that I guess I have to look around for."

Just the impression I have got reading impressions about the device. You need time to learn it and then it gets better.

Well he have had this personal Nokia crusade going on in Hofo for much over a year already. He have had plenty of Nokia phones, but iphone changed his views and i would say those who have been buying Nokia for years would agree that especially Symbian have been going downhill for long time already(coming from a guy who have been using many S60 phones since 2004).

So while he might exaggerate time to time he does many times give critisism where it's needed.

I know what i'm getting from N900, but there will be some who don't, some who just thought they bought Nokias flagship Symbian phone

If you liked the N810, you'll love the N900...

I just released a new Diablo package and so I had to spend some time working in OS2008. It was a real shock at how much better the N900's browser is. It's like all the best stuff from Tear and OS2008 browser, plus some extra cool stuff.

I'm not worried about former tablet owners. If you owned a tablet, and you've been reading here, then you'll be prepared for the problems you're going to face -- yes, the screen is smaller, but it is bright and sharp, which makes up for a lot (but not everything). Yes, there's no USB host. Yes, normal "desktop" apps look terrible on the new UI. Etc, etc.

But you already know these things, and you're prepared for them. That means you'll be pleasantly surprised by all the new toys you're getting, and how well they all work. Because, with the old tablets, you expected everything to not-quite-work, or work-if-you're-patient, or work-with-hacks... So many things on the N900 work well. It is such a pleasant surprise!

New users who have been exposed to neither the tablets nor the iPhone will be simply blown away by the N900. iPhone users will come in with a lot of wrong preconceptions, and so may be unhappy with the N900 at first, but if they stick with it long enough to get used to the Maemo approach to doing things, I think they'll find it to be equal if not better than the Apple offering. But there's that initial learning hump to get over, and I don't know how many long-time iPhone users would want to bother with it, since the N900 really isn't an "iPhone killer", only an "iPhone competitor" or peer...

Honestly I don't know what an iPhone killer would look like. What kind of features would make people drop their iPhones and rush to the new platform? Nothing that's currently on the market, in my opinion...
