But do you have to have a Skype account to use it for PC -> normal phone/mobile?
(I know I probably could go to the skype homepage and search alot... but now that this thread is here...) :-)
In the "settings" section of Skype You can prepay for "SkypeOut" credit. In my case I used the PayPal option. I bought $10 of credit with lasts me several months. If you go to the Skype Website you can setup a profile in which you type in your landline or cell phone number. Now when you use Skype to call a friend's phone, their caller ID will display either your number or name when you call.

Den in the USA - not so much Skype as Psychic. I was coming here this evening to start a basic thread asking my 'bear of very little brain' questions about skype!!! And here you have already answered most of them.

I have a skype account. I've had it about 2 months after my uni tutor pointed out to me that trying to do my thesis without talking to him was not going to be possible. (Mind, when he talked to me he he said my thesis was impossible any way, so I might have been better off without!)

And then someone invited me to go to Barcelona... and now I have family saying 'you will keep in touch and let us know you're ok, won't you?' Except my family are not technological, to say the least.

So question one was 'how do I pay for a skype credit account?' - I can do that by paypal - perfect.

Question two was about using skype over wifi (I'm assuming the Barcelona event will have wifi at the conference centre!) - that should be free at the skype-wifi end, yes?

How much (approximately) does it cost at the non-skype end? Does it cost more depending on where you are calling from? My assumption is that if I use skype to call my Uncle it should cost the same whether I'm calling from 2 miles up the road or from Spain, as the non-Skype component of the call is the same regardless... is that right? (yes, I know I'd use free minutes from my plan or call landline free after 6pm if I was here, but in theory!)

Thanks!!

Good afternoon, Kathy. Recently a friend of mine said he was going down to Lima, Peru (we live in US). I told him about Skype. He install it add prepaid for SkypeOut credit. From his hotel room in Lima, he called my cell phone every day with no charge to me, and with a cost per minute deducted from his credit. Of course, we also did live video from his computer to my computer for free. Another advantage using Skype: Our last big earthquake hit near where I work. Cell phones went out. Got throght to my wife on Skype to let her know that I was OK. I always run Skype (minimized) on my N800.

No, Skype to landline/mobile (known as Skypeout) costs the same regardless of where you are calling from/to.
Landline/mobile to skype is not available as I understand.

You buy credit for skypeout from skype.
It is voice over ip from your PC/N900 to the server nearest your Uncle and then enters the local phonelines and that bit from the server through to the local telco is what you pay for (plus skype's markup).
Used it to call my sister in Dubai, very cheap versus phone to phone call

Not true.

You get charged a different amount depending on where in the world you are calling from (may not be true if you have a plan where you pay a flat fee per month). For instance I may pay 2 cents per minute here in the US calling my friend's cell phone down the street. If I leave the country and then call my friend, I will pay more per minute depending upon which country I am in. I belive there is a cost list per country on the Skype Website. One other thing. Somewhere I read that at least one phone company in the UK charged nothing for using Skype to call phones.

here's the list of the price rates:
http://skype.com/intl/en-gb/prices/c...s/#allRatesTab

i always thought you had to name a certain location as "outgoing" hotspot, upon which the fees to landline/mobile numbers is based, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

for landline/mobile to skype look at this:

I bought $7.99/month no contract from skype. It is good for US and Canada, 24/7, with practically no limit (there is a small print that if it is being "abused", they will cancel your policy. Not quite sure how many min per month consider abuse though). I have been using it for over 9 month with my N8*0. I am very satisfy with it.
