not too long about a minute roughly.
I didnt mention, maybe I thought it wasn't relevant, but I had taken the battery out and resinserted.

no, nothing, just decided to call my phone rather than calling from the N900.

intermittent boot time issue with initialising the mic device.

b: After power off, leave it for a minute, power on,
then accept an incoming call from another phone
(without doing anything else since the restart),
does the mic work?

The reason for asking is to check if there's an intermittent driver issue with initialising the mic device.

Yes RevdKathy, seems like my mic is working fine.
Ive used it yesterday to make/recieve a couple of calls and also for the video recording.

I suspect it was a driver issue too as many have been hinting at in this forum.

Wish it works for the rest of the maemoians here who had a mic issue.

My girlfriend and I both have n900. Yesterday they were fine, but today her phone's microphone stopped working. Rebooting device solved problem (turning off and immediately starting it). Several hours later the same thing happened to my phone. Switching between profiles didn't help, but rebooting solved the problem.

So, even if your mic works fine it can suddenly stop working. Have anybody informed nokia? Posted to bugzilla?

Well mine is in for repair today, the shop I took it to seemed more than excited just to have one in their little mitts!

I should hear on Monday whether or not they could fix it or if it has to be sent away!

I have found out that the mic is not working when using Maemo recorder when the n900 is set to silent profile. (record and immediatly play it back --> nothing recorded). In general profile it works. Can anybody confirm this bug? I can't say if it's a Maemo recorder problem or system audio related.

I don't have a structural mic problem (hardware defect) but I did had 3 phonecalls where people couldn't hear me talk. Some other phonecall immediate after this worked fine. Strange stuf.... This must be fixed really soon.

It'll be good to know what the repair shop says. I've tried restarting mine so many times now. Calls from both directions. Battery in or out. Resetting to defaults. But not a hint of the microphone coming back.
It's great that some people are having luck with this, but I would be worried of the times it decides to stop working. Especially if you are on a call etc. Not the best to be worrying about it all the time.
I'll keep trying with resets etc, but I think I've ran out of combinations.

This is what scares me most - sending mine in for repairs, having it appear to be repaired and then clunking out after a few days. I really suspect it must be software related to be honest, so even if you get the mic replaced, it could happen again if it's something with the OS.

So, that's why I'll probably just get my money back and maybe buy one later when all the kinks are worked out.

I have just tried switching to Silent profile and make a call.
No problem, mic works fine.

What Maemo recorder are you talking about?
Is this the app in Extras?

Wow that thread is pretty shocking to me. It looks like Nokia has serious quality control issues across all of its products.
