This all sounds pretty interesting, but I also assume there could now be two types of Mic problem. Maybe software, maybe hardware.

For example, I've not been able to get my Mic working at all, and I didn't use the charger until sometime after I found the mic problem.
I do hope that these theories are right and most of the issues can be solved somehow. But unless I'm doing something odd, I can't seem to restart and get it back. Even after charging with usb etc.
Oh well, is just my bad luck. Glad you guys are looking into things quite deeply though. It's good to see the community come together like that.

Bug 6455 filled.

I may make some other test and see if something appear in dmesg.

Does anyone know if there is a consistant work around for this at the moment. I.e. once the Mic doesn't work, (as per previous replies), is a restart usually enough to get it going again? But then a further charge potetnially causes it to stop?

I'm still trying to work out if I could be struck by this bug, or if mine is a definite hardware or other issue instead. For example, say I fully charged my n900 - would I need to run it flat and recharge with a different charger before it had the opportunity to start working correctly?

Or am I just clutching at straws and hoping my Mic problem isn't as bad as it probably is?

Hey Ads,

IMHO the charger may not be the issue, its probably a hardware fault or a software glitch.
Check to see my previous post what I had experienced.
For what its worth, take the battery out, restart it, make a call to you N900 from another phone. See if the mic works, now make the call from N900 to another phone.
It could be a driver loading issue, but i havent started to look into it in detail.

Ive read somewhere here, that bluetooth headset works fine, so you could use your phone with that for now.

hope it works for you mate !
else keep a close here , im sure one of us will find out the issue soon.
You always have te return and exchange option with Nokia so not to worry, just bad that you cant get to use your N900 right away !

Your issue sounds a little different than mine where the mic never works. Looking at dmesg is a good start. Reproduce the problem as you said you could earlier. Look for any of the "switches" that activate a different audio profile. (IE: Headphone now connected etc.)

When the mic isn't working launch alasamixer ( alsamixer -c0 for full view) Check and record all the settings to compare against when the mic is working.

When the mic is not working try changing audio profiles either by inserting a headset or changing the profile to silent etc. See if that corrects the issue.

Unless you've got an application overriding the mixer settings or something strange like that I'd start looking into my repair / replacement or return options.

Does yours work with a headset or earbugs/external mic?

Yeah I've had a play with alsamixer, and I can't be sure now, but I believe that sometimes I turn the device on and the capture device isn't active and has zero volume - then other times it is active. I'm not sure if this shows a driver issue on top of the hardware one - as either way I get no response from the mic! I've tried ammending some of the settings in line with how adding a headset affects things, but still no luck.

I do however, every now and again receive a 'pop' type noise from the speakers when replaying a voice recording or video from the camera, but I also assume that could just be the speakers kicking in ready to dish out the sound that it hasn't actually recorded!

I've tried calls in both directions and using a SIP profile too. The external earphones that came with it work well - I assume this is because they hold their own microphone and just send the signal to the device for interpreting.

I'm awaiting my call back from Nokia - but might need to give them a nudge soon. I think I'll have to seek a replacement/repair for now, but I'll let you guys know if they say anything about bugs they know of etc - I'm assured that a more technical bod is looking into it at the moment.

My replacement N900 has arrived. Got a few days before I have to drop my old one back in the mail so will do some testing.

I can already say in my case the charger has nothing to do with the issue. I used all the accessories that came with my broken N900 on the new one without any issue. Mic works fine on the new unit. All of my audio settings / loaded drivers etc seem to be consistent on both units. Not seeing anything out of the ordinary yet. More playing tonight - now just having fun re-configuring the device.

Congrats on getting your replacement dude ...

btw, how did you go about getting it so quick !? Can you post when you sent it in for replacement, and how, and like, whats the overall procedure of getting one replaced ASAP ? I'm sure there are a lot of people here who would want to know these details unfortunately ..

I didn't go through official channels to get the replacement. I initiated a return to Amazon on my broken one and ordered another from Nokia. (Ordered it on Friday it was here this morning.) Amazon was very understanding and easy to work with during the return process. Once they receive my broken phone they will credit my card back. I pre-ordered this thing back in September so really didn't want to have to wait forever for a replacement. Amazon didn't know when they would have stock and Nokia said I had to send it off to repair.
