Our wonderful joyrney through anglo accents continues with indian accent.

Rajeev Suri, CEO of Nokia Siemens Networks. He's got lot explaining to do about that billion+ loss last quarter, I would guess.

-Unsuprisingly, financial crisis and collapse of orders from operators is what he starts with.

-Nasty new chinese competitors.

-Decision in 2008 to concentrate on profit over marketshare maybe wasn't the brightests one.

-Everybody suffering , not just NSN.

-Growth of mobile broadband is cause for optimism.

-Losing marketshare in falling market requires drastic decision. Reducing costs, capital management.

-Need to bring new customers. Concentrate on helping personalization and outsourcing services.

-Critical to success is to stay ahead in R&D. Merger (Nokia+Siemens) has helped in this. Need to concentrate R&D closer to markets. -->Ramping up R&D in India, China and Poland (Bye bye finn and german engineers). 2 billion in R&D 2009. 40% more people working in radio R&D than Nokia or Siemens had alone.

-Reports on NSN's death have been greatly extragrated. NSN will win. Also, ponies for everybody.

-23 new mobile broadband tech customers in 2009.

-LTE LTE LTE LTE. First LTE call by NSN. Happens only one time each generation (duh!).

-NSN winning in 3,5G and LTE.

-200 service contracts with operators. Number 1 or 2 in managed services in all markets. Evil chinese not even on map in managed services. Over billion customers on networks that NSN manages.

-Total network technology market won't go down anymore in 2010, remains flat. NSN intends to grow in flat market, because they are full of win.

In conclusion: Rajeev had the, by far, toughest talk to make. Pulled it off nicely.

Yes. Capital market days are all about control, saying all the right things and setting expectations. I listened through until the break, and at some point in time someone said, I believe Kai Öistämö, that 2009 has been a tough year, tougher than they expected, or words to that effect. Please note I'm not quoting verbatim here. In the next breath it's "but we're taking all the right decisions now." Yes, hopefully, but they don't know. How could they?

The presentation meets my expectations. Apart from pounding the Symbian, Symbian, Symbian, and "don't confuse the UI with the OS, Symbian is good and has a lot of reach", they talk a lot about the emerging markets, and their success in India in particular. The sheer volume that Nokia represents. They are #1, after all. They do admit the competitive landscape has changed.

The presentations are a lot of "what!, and some high level "how's."

There are some claims and promising statements and if they deliver on those statments, Maemo6 is going to be the dog's bollocks. They also say focus the fundamentals, and do few things really well. They talk about how smartly they've done the N900 launch, using the geek community, developers and key opinion leaders on the web. Oh, yes, they even quote Engadget. Listening to the obvious pride they are showing in how they staged the N900 introduction makes me wonder if the delay, confusing availability and messy sales processes, were all planned to create "talk," if not outright hype around the N900. It's also interesting to note what they do not talk about regarding this device, like how many unique orders they have actually got for the device, or expected sales volume, or whether it will be Maemo6 compatible.

Notice that they say milestone for Symbian... not device as they say with Maemo 6. Hmmm... if they are bringing Harmattan that quickly, I would dare to say that the core hardware will be the same as the N900, which would make the N900's compatible with Maemo 6.
