I found that this seems to work best when you enable the Network location as well in settings. There is a discussion thread on this too.

How does enabling this affect the battery usage? Do the different resolutions use more/less battery (ex. city uses less than street level)?

There appears to be a bug in the functionality of this feature.

I have the PR 1.1 update installed. The string always appears to be based on the network positioning result rather than using the GPS position. If I disable the network positioning then OVI maps locks fine. If I leave OVI maps open to keep the GPS switched on and select Street Level from location in availability I am then prompted to enable network positioning. If this is declined then the request to show position is cancelled. If not then the string used is not street level and identical to that given when GPS is not used too.

Does anyone else have the same behaviour on their unit?

I don't know, but I have the same questions:

but I didn't really get the level of responses needed to put any patterns together.

There is some interesting speculation about the amount of time that the radio stays on following a location update:

I think it should be, for all location sharing settings less detailed than "street level", as using network based positioning *should* require less power than activating the GPS chip.

I'll try and test next time I am out and about.

Anybody knows if it is possible to enable location status individually for specific accounts? (I don't necessarily want _all_ my accounts to say where I am)

Bump!

I've always wondered what this feature is actually for?

When i go into my availability to enable IM accounts, it gives me the option to show position.

If i do this, who sees it? I would have skype, facebook and msn activated usually.

I have skype and msn active and they both get updated with my location in my status messages. It doesn't seem to work very well though. It will update my status once and then stay the same for days even if I have driven 300 miles and stayed there for the weekend - even rebooting the phone doesn't get it to recheck the location.

Loading up ovi maps will get gps sync pretty quick and show me what street I am on, but IM location still doesn't change. I have it set to street level but rarely see more than the city I am in.
